The present invention describes an image display apparatus for directing an image towards an observer. The apparatus comprises a source of image point rays; a collimating device configured to collimate image point rays to produce collimated image rays; and, a prism sheet configured to receive the collimated image rays. The prism sheet comprises an array of micro-prisms, each micro-prism having two reflective facets arranged such that each collimated image ray is reflected off one facet and then an adjacent facet. Reflection from the second facet reorients the collimated image rays towards an image observation zone. The collimated image rays from an upper portion of the prism sheet converge with collimated image rays from a lower portion of the prism sheet within the image observation zone. The present invention also describes a method for directing an image towards an observer.

Collimating apparatus

The present invention describes a collimating system comprising a plurality of collimating apparatuses forming an array. Each collimating apparatus comprises a light source, and a collimating opticconfigured to collimate light received from the light source. The collimating system further comprises a homogenising optical arrangementspaced apart from the array and configured to extend substantially perpendicular to collimated light exiting each collimating apparatus. The homogenising optical arrangementis configured to receive light from each collimating apparatus, the received light having a non-uniform relative radiance profile. The homogenising optical arrangementis configured such that light received from adjacent collimating apparatuses superimposes on exiting the homogenising optical arrangement, and forms a flattened relative radiance profile

An artificial skylight generally includes at least one light source, at least one first collimator, a prism sheet, and at least one transmissive material. The at least one first collimator is configured to collimate light from the at least one light source. The prism sheet is disposed adjacent to the at least one first collimator and is configured to reflect and refract collimated light received from the at least one first collimator. The at least one transmissive material is disposed adjacent to the prism sheet and is configured to radiate light diffusely.

Artificial skylight and methods

A display includes a first reflecting surface, a second reflecting surface, and a beam splitter. The second reflecting surface is positioned parallel with respect to the first reflecting surface, and the beam splitter is disposed between the first and second reflecting surfaces. The beam splitter includes a first transmissive substrate having opposed first and second sides and a length extending from a first end to a second end. A first layer of material is disposed on at least one of the first or second sides of the first transmissive substrate. The first layer of reflective material extends from the first end of the first transmissive substrate to a location along the length of the first transmissive substrate.

Collimating display and methods

An infinity display device with autostereoscopic capability having one or more high lumen light sources, a transmissive spatial light modulator (SLM), light collimating optics and a rectilinear light guide. Once the light has passed through the SLMan objectiveconverges the image encoded rays toward a pointrepresenting the entrance pupilof said light guide. A second lensthen collimates the rays in one plane (Tangential) while a lenticular arrayis used for collimating rays in the second plane (Sagittal). Next, a first surface mirrorreflects all said rays toward a triangular prism, where they undergo colour separation before entering the light guide. The light guide may itself consist of two, parallel, first surface mirrors&one of which is partially transmissive. Finally a Fresnel screentilts the light toward the observer.
