A vehicle that includes front and rear wheels, an engine, an engine-driven rear angle drive for supplying torque to the rear wheels, and a power train for supplying torque from the engine to the front wheels. The power train includes driving and driven members and a coupler having an actuator switchable between on and off positions, the actuator, when off, permitting the driven member to turn freely and independently of the driving member and, when on, enabling the coupler to respond to predetermined minimum differences in rotational speed between the driving and driven members to lock these members together to rotationally couple the engine to at least one of the front wheels.

This invention relates to multiple driven axle vehicles, and particularly to all-terrain vehicles equipped for rear wheel drive, four wheel drive, and on-demand front wheel drive. The invention is directed toward a system of switchable traction options allowing the vehicle operator to easily choose between different modes, such as rear wheel drive with an open or unlocked differential, rear wheel drive with a locked differential, four wheel drive with open differentials, four wheel drive with one locked differential, four wheel drive with two locked differentials, or rear wheel drive with on-demand four wheel drive.

A rider interface for electronic or mechanical shifting of an ATV provided on the ATV handlebars. An up-shift mechanism is located on one side of the ATV and a down-shift mechanism is located remotely from the up-shift mechanism on an opposite side of the ATV. Preferably, the up-shift mechanism is in the form of a paddle lever and the down-shift mechanism is in the form of a trigger lever.

A drive clutch for a CVT comprising a stationary sheave, a movable sheave, a motor and a centrifugal weight system. The movable sheave is movable closer to or further from the stationary sheave relative to a longitudinal axis. The motor may be coupled to an input shaft such that it is rotatable relative to or independently of the rotation of the input shaft. The centrifugal weight system is operably connected to the motor so as to pivot centrifugally outward relative to the longitudinal axis in response to the rotation of the motor, moving the movable sheave closer to or further from the stationary sheave.

Continuously variable transmission with decoupled centrifugal weight

An operator selectable engine braking assist system is provided that allows the operator of a vehicle to select the amount of engine braking assist provided. An engine braking assist selector is provided to allow the operator to select a level of engine braking assist. A controller is programmed with an engine braking algorithm and implements the algorithm in response to the selector to produce engine braking in an amount selected by the operator.
