Methods and blind fasteners with EME protection are provided. A blind fastener comprises a shank having a bulb forming portion; a head; and an electromagnetic effects (EME) protection sealant positioned on at least one of the bulb forming portion of the shank or under the head.

The present disclosure provides a blind tack fastener. The blind tack fastener includes an elongated body having a first end and a second end opposite the first end. The blind tack fastener also includes a collar surrounding a portion of the elongated body. The blind tack fastener also includes a sleeve surrounding the elongated body and positioned between the second end of the elongated body and the collar. A region of the sleeve is band annealed.

A method of protecting an air vehicle against lightning strikes includes inserting a fastener through a hole in conjoined structures, the fastener defining an axis along its length and having a threaded end and a sleeve, and installing a washer assembly over the threaded end and the sleeve, the washer assembly having a metallic washer and a polymer seal radially inward of the metallic washer. The seal includes a lower seal portion defining a counter-bore, and an upper seal portion extending axially from the lower seal portion. The method includes installing a counter-bored nut on the threaded end, and applying torque to the nut to compress the lower seal portion against a surface of the conjoined structures and around the sleeve at the counter-bore of the seal, and to compress the upper seal portion of the seal into a counter-bore of the nut and around the threaded end.

An electromagnetic effect suppressing termination part for a fastener formed of a metallic material, the fastener having a head, a shank, and a male threaded portion opposite the head, has a metallic core coated by a layer of dielectric material. An internal bore of the termination part includes an inner wall, a counterbore hole, and a cavity disposed therebetween. An outer surface includes an outer wall, and a frustoconical wall positioned proximally relative to the outer wall, the frustoconical wall extending radially outwardly from the outer wall and having an included angle of less than approximately 90 degrees. A seal is disposed in the counterbore hole, and the frustoconical wall is configured so that a compressive force applied to the frustoconical wall deforms the inner wall to conform to the male threaded portion of the fastener and deforms the seal to fill the cavity.

A washer assembly including a metallic washer and a polymer seal. The metallic washer defines a cylindrical void and an axis therethrough. The polymer seal is attached to the metallic washer and is positioned radially inward thereof. The polymer seal includes a lower seal portion positioned at least partially within the cylindrical void and defining a counter-bore, and an upper seal portion extending axially from the lower seal portion. The lower seal portion is configured to engage, at the counter-bore, a fastener to form a seal to reduce escape of energized particles. The upper seal portion is configured to engage a counter-bore of a counter-bored nut to form a seal inside the counter-bored nut to reduce escape of energized particles.

An electromagnetic effect suppressing termination part is provided for a fastener formed of a metallic material, the fastener having a head, a shank, and a threaded portion opposite the head. The termination part includes a main body defining an internally threaded portion configured to threadably receive the threaded portion of the fastener, the internally threaded portion defining a thread major diameter. A collar is coupled to a distal end of the main body by a frangible web, wherein the main body, collar, and frangible web are formed of a metallic core coated by a layer of dielectric material. The frangible web, when broken, presents an exposed portion of the metallic core, wherein the frangible web includes an inner surface radially outwardly offset from the thread major diameter of the internally threaded portion by a setback distance.

A dual protection inner seal washer employs a radially outward metallic portion having a dielectric coating and a radially inward polymeric portion engaging the metallic portion at an interface with an interference fit. The polymeric portion has at least one tapering compression surface to engage a surface of a structure proximate a hole and further has a fastener element contact surface to engage a mating surface on a fastener system element. Torqueing of the fastener element compresses the at least one compression surface inducing a predetermined pressure in the polymeric portion in a joint created by the fastener element and structure.
