In one example, a modified electrical device includes a body and at least one connector on the body to make power and control connections with an active cover plate. In some embodiments, a wall plate system may include a modified electrical device or receptacle and/or an active cover plate.

Modified electrical devices

In one example, a cover plate for an electrical receptacle may include a face plate, an engaging feature disposed on the face plate, and a spring clip, wherein the engaging feature disposed on the face plate engages with the spring clip and secures the spring clip in at least two different positions with respect to the face plate.

Active cover plates

In one example, a modified electrical device includes a body and at least one connector on the body to make power and control connections with an active cover plate. A system includes an active cover plate with low voltage circuitry and a first interface and a modified electrical device. The modified electrical device includes high voltage circuitry and a second interface to connect to the first interface to supply low voltage to the active cover plate. A method for controlling a flow of power through a modified electrical device is also provided.

One embodiment includes a cover plate for an electrical receptacle. The cover plate includes first and second conductors that protrude rearward from the cover plate and are configured to contact terminals of a receptacle to supply power to a load associated with the cover plate. Insulators over at least a portion of the conductors inhibit the conductors from contacting other conductive materials.

In one example, an active cover plate includes a faceplate, a load and a spring clip adjustable in at least one of a horizontal direction and a vertical direction with respect to the faceplate to electrically interface with a receptacle body and extract electrical power from the receptacle body to energize the load. A method for installing an active cover plate on an electrical receptacle is also provided.

In one example, an active cover plate includes a faceplate, a load and a spring clip extending rearward from the faceplate to interface with a receptacle body, wherein the spring clip includes a flexible conductive portion connected to the face plate by a first end and a non-conductive portion connected to an opposite end of the flexible conductive portion, wherein the spring clips extract electrical power from the receptacle body to energize the load.
