An apparatus includes a circuit that has a normal mode of operation and a low-power mode of operation. The circuit consumes more power in the normal mode of operation than in the low-power mode of operation. The apparatus further includes a power-supply circuit. The power-supply circuit provides a normal supply voltage to the circuit in the normal mode of operation. The power-supply circuit includes a non-linear circuit to provide a compressed supply voltage to the circuit in the low-power mode of operation, wherein the normal supply voltage is greater than the compressed supply voltage.

Apparatus for power consumption reduction in electronic circuitry and associated methods

A band gap circuit with offset voltage error correction including a diode junction circuit, an error amplifier, a current device, a bias current generator, a calibration circuit, and a mode control circuit. During a normal mode of operation, the error amplifier monitors feedback nodes of the diode junction circuit and drives the current device to provide a control current to the diode junction circuit. During a calibration mode, the current device is decoupled from the diode junction circuit and the inputs of the error amplifier are shorted together, the bias generator circuit sinks a bias current from the current device and separately sources a bias current to the diode junction circuit such that the error amplifier operates as a comparator, and the calibration circuit monitors the output of the current device while adjusting a trim current of the error amplifier to minimize an offset voltage error of the error amplifier.

A long-wave or medium-wave receiver receives a first signal from a first terminal of a loopstick antenna on a positive antenna input terminal of the receiver and receives a second signal from a second terminal of the loopstick antenna on a negative antenna input terminal of the receiver. The first and second signals are processed differentially in the receiver. The receiver may optionally be configured to operate in either a differential mode or a single-ended mode by setting switches to selectively connect one of the antenna input terminals to ground in single-ended mode.

In one embodiment, the present invention includes a method for determining if a frequency control instruction would cause a first capacitor bank to reach a limit and adjusting the first capacitor bank in a first direction using a calibration value and adjusting a second capacitor bank in a second direction if the first capacitor bank would reach the limit. Furthermore, the calibration value may be calculated and stored in accordance with other embodiments. In such manner, small changes in capacitance and correspondingly small changes in frequency may be effected.

In one embodiment, the present invention includes a single chip radio tuner, which may be adapted within an integrated circuit (IC). The tuner may be provided with a configurable front end to receive and process a radio frequency (RF) signal via a signal path. A radio receiver such as a frequency modulation (FM) receiver, for example, includes a radio frequency (RF) amplifier having an adjustable gain output. The RF amplifier may be configured to receive and amplify an incoming RF signal. The receiver also includes an intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier having an adjustable gain output. The IF amplifier may be configured to receive and amplify an IF signal that corresponds to the RF signal. The receiver also includes a gain control unit that is coupled to the RF amplifier and the IF amplifier. The gain control unit may be configured to independently adjust the gain of each of the RF amplifier and the IF amplifier, dependent upon a peak output level of both the RF amplifier and the IF amplifier.

Mechanism for controlling amplifier gain in a radio receiver

A wireless communication receiver is disclosed that operates in a test mode to determine image correction information that is used to suppress undesired image signals when the receiver switches to a normal operational mode. In one embodiment, the receiver includes a frequency synthesizer coupled by a quadrature divider to an in-phase (I) mixer and a quadrature mixer. The mixers are coupled by respective analog to digital converters (ADCs) to respective I and Q channel inputs of a digital signal processor (DSP). In the test mode, a test tone is provided to the mixer inputs. The test tone is divided down further and provided to clock the frequency synthesizer, the ADCs and the DSP. This configuration locks together the mixers, frequency synthesizer, ADCs and DSP ratiometrically in frequency during the test mode while image correction information is being determined. When the receiver switches to a normal operating mode, the frequency synthesizer, ADCs and DSP are clocked by a main clock signal instead of the divided down test tone, and the test tone is removed from the mixers.
