Movement of a sound source toward or away from a listener may be simulated by crossfading a sound level of a point sound source signal representation of a source waveform and a spherical harmonic representation of the source waveform as a simulated distance of a listener from a sound source changes to generate a cross-faded waveform. A speaker may be driven with the cross-faded waveform.

Method for acoustically rendering the size of a sound source

A method for simulation of movement of a sound source comprising convolving a source wave form with at least an Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to generate a point sound source at a simulated first distance from the listener, generating a spherical harmonic representation of the source waveform at a simulated second distance from the listener, crossfading the sound level of the point sound source and the spherical harmonic representation of the source waveform at a simulated second distance from the listener and driving a speaker with the cross-faded spherical harmonic representation of the source waveform and the point sound source.

Method for acoustically rendering the size of sound a source

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method and system for processing an audio signal to optimize the localization of sound in a sound system using a head related transfer function HRTF). A location of a user is determined and a speaker is driven with a waveform representing a location specific cue having a desired user response. The location specific cue is associated with a defined HRTF for the determined location of the user. A user response to location specific cue is detected and compared to the location specific cue. The defined HRTF is then updated with information from the comparison of the user response to the location specific cue.

Method of improving localization of surround sound

A method for localization of sound in a speaker system comprises determining speaker locations of a plurality of speakers in a speaker system, determining a user location of a user within a room, and modifying audio signals to be transmitted to each of the plurality of speakers based on the user location in the room relative to a corresponding one of the speaker locations. An optimum modification of the audio signals for each of the plurality of speakers includes eliminating locational effects of the user location within the room.

Localization of sound in a speaker system

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for adjustment of room sound levels, comprising; driving a speaker with a known waveform, detecting a sound wave from the speaker with at least two microphones wherein the at least two microphones are configured in a known orientation, utilizing the known waveform and the sound wave detected by the at least two microphones and the known orientation of the at least two microphones to generate a room sound dynamic; applying a filter to adjust a sound level to account for the room sound dynamic. The room sound dynamic may be the speaker layout of the room, the room impulse response, the distance or angle of each speaker from the center of the room or other physical constraints that may affect the user's perception of sound coming from a sound system.

Method for dynamic sound equalization

A system for generating a head-related transfer function, HRTF, for a given position with respect to a listener, the system comprising a dividing unit operable to divide each of a plurality of existing HRTFs, each corresponding to a respective plurality of positions, into first and second components, an interaural time difference determination unit operable to determine an interaural time difference expected by a user for a sound source located at the given position in dependence upon the respective first components, an interpolation unit operable to generate an interpolated second component by interpolating generated second components using a weighting dependent upon the respective positions for the corresponding HRFTs and the given position, and a generation unit operable to generate an HRTF for the given position in dependence upon the interaural time difference and the interpolated second component.

Transfer function generation system and method

A method for improved virtual localization of sound comprises making a sound at an origin point, recording the sound with two or more recording devices at, two or more different distances from the origin point, generate a head-related transfer function (HRTF) for each of signals received from the two or more recording devices at the two or more different distances from the origin point, convolving a waveform with a localized HRTF generated using at least one of the HRTFs, and drive a speaker with the convolved waveform.

Virtual localization of sound

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for processing a source audio signal in order to localize sounds. In particular, aspects of the present disclosure relate to sound localization techniques which externalize sounds for headphone audio, such as a virtual surround sound headphone system. In various implementations, room reverberations and other acoustic effects of the environment may be more accurately modeled using improved room reverberation models. For example, in some implementations, the underlying source signal may be filtered with a filter representing a room impulse response that is a combination of a stereo room impulse response and a mono room impulse response. By way of further example, in some implementations the source signal may be filtered with a combined impulse response filter that is derived from binaural recordings of simulated impulses recorded in a desired reverberant environment.
