A dual constituent container includes a compartment for liquids and an elongate inwardly directed recess open to the container exterior and isolated from the compartment. The container is formed by blow molding, using a mold that incorporates a shaping feature projected longitudinally into the mold cavity. The shaping feature incorporates an arrangement of longitudinal channels having a channel width such that when a thermoplastic preform is expanded into contact with the mold cavity walls and the shaping feature, portions of the expanded preform span the channels and cooperate with the channels to provide passages that accommodate pressurized air to facilitate separation of the expanded preform from the shaping feature. The same portions of the expanded preform can partially protrude into the channels, thus to form longitudinal ribs along the recess which aid in frictionally holding a secondary constituent.

Dual constituent container and fabrication process

Method for compression molding plastic articles. The method includes the step of providing a plurality of molds mounted for travel around a first axis. Each mold includes upper and lower mold sections, with at least one of the mold sections being moveable in a non-circular first endless path, and being moveable with respect to the other mold section to form a mold cavity. A mold charge delivery system is provided to deliver individual mold charges to the mold cavities and includes at least one delivery mechanism that travels in a second endless path around a second axis spaced from the first axis, wherein the second endless path overlies a portion of the first endless path. At least one of the mold sections is moved radially relative to the first axis during at least a portion of the first endless path wherein the second endless path overlies the first endless path.

Method for compression molding plastic articles

Apparatus for compression molding plastic articles includes a plurality of molds mounted for travel around a first axis. Each mold includes an upper mold section and a lower mold section, with at least one of the upper and lower mold sections being moveable in a non-circular first endless path, and being moveable with respect to the other mold section to form a mold cavity. A mold charge delivery system delivers individual mold charges to the mold cavities and includes at least one delivery mechanism that travels in a second endless path around a second axis spaced from the first axis, wherein the second endless path overlies a portion of the first endless path.

Compression molding apparatus

A system and a method for controlling a container manufacturing machine include a thickness monitor () for determining an average wall thickness of containers produced by the machine. The system uses the average wall thickness to adjust machine control to change operation of the machine and adjust the quality of the containers being produced. The system also responds to feedback from pneumatic devices (), heaters (), mechanical devices and temperature sensors () to determine corrections to be made to the machine operation.

Container manufacturing inspection and control system

A double-walled container is formed by gas assist injection molding. Thereafter, the container is further processed by 1) inserting a gas between the container layers, 2) injecting a colored liquid between the container layers, 3) evacuating the void space between the container layers, or 4) pressurizing the space between the container layers.

The present invention relates to an injection molded preform comprising an open ended mouth forming portion, an intermediate body forming portion, and a closed base forming portion, wherein said preform comprises (1) a blend of (i) PEN copolymer and (ii) PET homopolymer or PET copolymer, such that when said PET and PEN components are physically mixed into a blend, said blend has about 5-70 wt %. PEN copolymer and 30 to 95 wt % PET homopolymer of copolymer therein, (2) a PEN copolymer, or (3) PEN homopolymer, and said preform having a stretch ratio in the range of 18:1 to 25:1 in order form a bottle having a volume in the range of 250 ml to 850 ml, wherein the stretch index is below 130 cm. Alternatively, said preform has a stretch ratio in the range of 18:1 to 20:1 in order to form a bottle having a volume in the range of 250 ml to 1000 ml. The invention further relates to an injection mold defining a cavity corresponding to an injection molded preform of the invention. In addition, the invention relates to a blow-molded container produced from the injection molded plastic preform described above.

Preform and bottle using pet/pen blends and copolymers

A can package comprising a plurality of cans, preferably twelve, including a flat carrier in the form of a sheet having openings stretched over the upper ends of the cans and a tubular banding strap of plastic material stretched about the periphery of the group of cans and bonded along one edge to the periphery of the carrier. A preform for making oriented plastic containers wherein the preform is first formed and thereafter reheated to an orientation temperature range and blown to final container shape comprising an open ended finish part made of a first plastic material, and an elongated main hollow body of orientable strain-hardenable thermoplastic material molded and bonded in situ on the open ended finish. The hollow body includes a main container body forming portion and a bottom container forming portion closing the open end of the main body forming portion. The main body has a portion projecting axially within the open end of the finish terminating in a spaced relationship to the open free end of the finish and interlocked with the finish part.

Oriented plastic container

A method is disclosed for thermally conditioning an essentially tubular parison of polyethylene terephthalate material to a desired orientation temperature at which the polyethylene terephthalate material can be biaxially stretched. The method comprises the steps of heating the parison by applying heat to the exterior surface thereof until the surface reaches a maximum heating temperature less than the temperature at which the polyethylene terephthalate material begins to crystalize and then cooling the heated exterior surface of the parison to remove the heat therefrom while the heat within the wall of the parison diffuses therethrough to raise the temperature of the opposing interior surface toward the desired orientation temperature. The method further includes the subsequent steps of reheating the parison by applying heat to the cooled exterior surface thereof until the surface reaches a temperature no higher than the maximum heating temperature to again add heat within the wall of the parison and then recooling the reheated exterior surface of the parison to again remove the heat therefrom until the additional heat within the wall of the parison diffuses therethrough to further raise the temperature of the opposing interior surface to approximately the desired orientation temperature so that the temperature through the wall of the parison is substantially uniform from the reheated exterior surface to the opposing interior surface.

Method for thermally conditioning a thermoplastic preform

A thermoplastic, generally tubular parison for the blow molding of a thermoplastic container and a method and apparatus for same. The parison includes a finish or neck having a single helical thread extending less than 360.degree. about the circumference of the finish. The radius of the parison at any point on the outside surface is less than the radius through the crest of the helical thread, whereby the parison can be injection molded in an injection molding apparatus with an injection mold comprising all axially movable mold sections.
