Systems, tools, and screws for reducing a bone fracture are disclosed. In embodiments, the system comprises: a screw, a driver, a sleeve comprising a longitudinal bore configured to enable insertion of the driver through the sleeve, a locking mechanism configurable into a first state that locks the sleeve to the driver and a second state that unlocks the sleeve from the driver, and a retaining sleeve coupled to a first end of the driver and configured to couple to the screw. In the first state, the sleeve applies a compressive force while distal threads of the screw are driven into the bone while retaining proximal threads of the screw in the sleeve. After a desired compression is achieved, the locking mechanism is configured to the second state, allowing the proximal threads of the screw to be driven into the bone while maintaining application of the compressive force to the bone.

Reduction tool

A deployment device and an associated surgical fastener as well as their methods of use are disclosed. In one embodiment, the deployment device includes a restraining mechanism constructed and arranged to temporarily limiting movement of a surgical fastener back span. The surgical fastener includes two legs extending in a distal direction from opposing ends of the back span. The legs are in a first closed position with a first shape. The deployment device also includes a spreader configured and arranged to engage the legs of the surgical fastener in the first closed position. When the spreader is moved in a distal direction relative to the back span, the spreader spreads the legs of the surgical fastener from the first closed position to a second open position as the back span is limited from distally moving by the restraining mechanism.

Surgical fastener deployment system

The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for the stabilization and fastening of two pieces of tissue. A single device may be used to both stabilize and fasten the two pieces of tissue, or a separate stabilizing device may be used in conjunction with a fastening device. After the pieces of tissue are stabilized, they are fastened together using sutures or clips. One exemplary embodiment of a suture-based fastener comprises a needle connected to a suture. The needle enters the blind side of the tissue and exits the front side. The suture is then tied in a knot to secure the pieces of tissue. One example of a clip-based fastener comprises a spring-loaded clip having two arms with tapered distal ends and barbs. The probe includes a deployment mechanism which causes the clip to pierce and lockingly secure the two pieces of tissue.

Minimally invasive mitral valve repair method and apparatus

A bone cutting and injecting device for cutting maxillary bone and injecting a filler through the maxillary bone under a subantral membrane to separate the subantral membrane from the maxillary bone and fill the space formed therebetween. The device includes a hollow tubular element having a diameter sized to be inserted into a pilot hole in the maxillary bone, a piston longitudinally displaceable within the hollow tubular element, and a cutter mounted to the piston and operably disposed adjacent the distal end of the hollow tubular element. A fluid path is defined through the hollow tubular element for guiding the filler, and the cutter is configured to redirect the filler in a transverse or radial direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the tubular element.

Maxillary bone cutting and injection system and method of using the same

The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for the stabilization and fastening of two pieces of tissue. A single device may be used to both stabilize and fasten the two pieces of tissue, or a separate stabilizing device may be used in conjunction with a fastening device. The stabilizing device may comprise a probe with vacuum ports and/or mechanical clamps disposed at the distal end to approximate the two pieces of tissue. After the pieces of tissue are stabilized, they are fastened together using sutures or clips. One exemplary embodiment of a suture-based fastener comprises a toggle and suture arrangement deployed by a needle, wherein the needle enters the front side of the tissue and exits the blind side. In a second exemplary embodiment, the suture-based fastener comprises a needle connected to a suture. The needle enters the blind side of the tissue and exits the front side. The suture is then tied in a knot to secure the pieces of tissue. One example of a clip-based fastener comprises a spring-loaded clip having two arms with tapered distal ends and barbs. The probe includes a deployment mechanism which causes the clip to pierce and lockingly secure the two pieces of tissue.

A surgical tool and method of operation are provided. The surgical tool includes an end effector, such as a surgical scissor. The end effector is coupled to an actuating mechanism having a clevis and a pulley. A cable engages the pulley and is attached to one side of the clevis. When one portion of the cable is pulled, the clevis is moved in a first direction causing the end effector to open. When a second portion of the cable is pulled, the clevis moves in the opposite direction and the end effector is closed. The system also includes a mechanism for changing the orientation of the end effector. Another embodiment includes a mechanism for actuating the cable and the end effector.

Surgical tool and method of operation

A screw assembly () for insertion into a bone region (A) (B) includes a screw body () and a washer (). The screw body () includes a distal end (), a proximal end (), and a distal threaded area (), and a proximal threaded area (). The distal threaded area () is positioned near the distal end () and the proximal threaded area () is positioned near the proximal end (). The washer () includes a washer threaded area () that engages the proximal threaded area () to selectively secure the washer () to the screw body (). With this design, the washer () can be selectively attached to the screw body () and different sized washers () can be alternatively and selectively secured to the screw body (). As a result thereof, the person inserting the screw assembly () can pick the washer () size best suited to retain the bone region (A) (B) in which the screw assembly () is being inserted.

Improvements are provided for a syringe-to-syringe mixing system to improve the mixing characteristics of the system. In one embodiment, a mixing apparatus includes opposite fittings for mounting to a pair of syringes. The mixing apparatus defines a fluid passageway therethrough and includes a flow modifying element disposed within the passageway. The flow modifying element is configured to increase the flow velocity, disrupt the fluid flow or introduce turbulence into the fluid flow between the two syringes. In another embodiment, a nozzle element is disposed within the tip of the syringe, the element configured to increase the fluid flow therethrough. The nozzle element can be a nozzle insert removably mounted within the tip, or an integrally formed nozzle within the tip.

Systems and methods for mixing fluids

A medical fastener (), preferably bioabsorbable, is used for repairing torn soft tissue, particularly meniscal tissue (). The fastener () can have an enlarged head () at the proximate end to engage meniscal tissue () adjacent to a tear (), and a pointed distal tip () at the other end to ease insertion of the fastener () into the meniscus (). The shank () of the fastener () bridges across the tear (). Opposite ends of the shank () are secured in the meniscal tissue () by a medical adhesive, preferably bioabsorbable, and preferably at locations remote from the tear () so as not to interfere with healing of the tear (). The fastener () can have a blind bore () opening through the head () of the fastener () and extending through the shank () to a location close to the tip () and generally radial holes () communicating between the bore () and the exterior of the shank (). The medical adhesive can be injected through the bore () for passage outward through the holes ().

Soft tissue repair system

A lancer device that enables a user to draw blood from a patient and discard the used lancet without touching it. The device also has an adjustable tip for selecting the depth of stylet penetration into the patient and a triggering mechanism that utilizes a yoke latch and a leaf spring to discharge the lancet. The lancer also has a dampening feature to reduce vibrations when the lancet is moving.

A medical punch includes a longitudinally dividable anvil with a reduced cross-sectional dimension facilitating insertion of the anvil into the vessel wall to achieve a clean aperture in the vessel wall by cooperative shearing action of a cutting edge and an anvil edge. In another embodiment, the instrument incorporates a measuring device for determining the thickness of a vessel wall between an anvil and a distal end of a cylindrical structure which together form a caliper, and the measuring device can also constitute a medical punch by cooperative shearing action of a cutting edge and an anvil to achieve a clean aperture in the vessel wall.

The present invention relates to a mounting adapter for releasably securing accessories, tools, or their medical instruments to the distal end of an endoscope. The adapter is compatible with endoscopic accessories that have a cylindrical mounting surface, which becomes positioned over a length of the distal end of an endoscope. The adaptor is preferably provided in two components to support both ends of a cylindrical accessory on the endoscope surface. The adapter is configured to hold the accessory on the endoscope shaft by frictional engagement and is configured to maintain the accessory concentric with the shaft along its length. The adapter also is configured to mount an accessory to a wide range of commercially available endoscope diameters.
