Superabrasive tools incorporating into the structure filamentary particles formed from a microcrystalline alumina confer significant advantages which depend on the orientation of the particles.

Superabrasive tool

A process is described for the production of bonded abrasive products in which the abrasive particles are filamentary alumina particles with a substantially uniform cross-section and an aspect ratio of at least about 1:1.

Sintered sol gel alumina abrasive filaments

A filament shaped sintered alumina based abrasive made up predominantly of fine alpha alumina crystals.

A device and process is disclosed for producing filamentary abrasive particles having substantially equal aspect ratios without further length reduction.

Process for the manufacture of filamentary abrasive particles

Useful ceramic bodies can be made by mixing zirconia powder with seeded alumina gel, drying, and firing at a high enough temperature to convert the alumina in the gel to microcrystalline alpha alumina. Abrasive grits made in this way, with a zirconia content between 15 and 30 weight percent and at least half the zirconia in the tetragonal crystal form are particularly valuable for use in grinding wheels for snagging steels.
