A recoil absorber for a firearm including a housing, a stock carrier assembly, a primary spring, and a damper cartridge assembly. The damper cartridge assembly includes a high pressure chamber, a low pressure chamber, and a piston. The piston includes a first piston orifice, a second piston orifice, a second spring, and a poppet which includes a poppet orifice. The second spring applies a biasing force on the poppet. Fluid may flow from the high pressure chamber through the poppet orifice and through the first piston orifice into the low pressure chamber when the pressure of the fluid in the high pressure chamber is between a first pressure and a second pressure. When the pressure increases above the second pressure, the poppet compresses the second spring to self-regulate the pressure in the high pressure chamber.

Disclosed herein in an energy absorption device that incorporates a diverse range of uses within a single shock absorber. The disclosed energy absorption device is a novel combination of interaction between various components (e.g., piston head, shock tube, cylinder end, external cylinder, and adjustment mechanism) within a single shock absorber. When the components disclosed herein are considered together and designed as an interrelated assembly, the ability to incorporate such a diverse range of uses within a single device emerges. The ability to combine dashpot, square wave, progressive wave, and self-compensating damping in a single device is unprecedented, as is the ability to deliver sublinear damping force vs. input velocity performance in an adjustable device. The disclosed device allows a user to make simpler sizing calculations and decisions, and provides the user with the ability to adjust the shock absorber to a specific application, for example, with the turn of an adjustment knob.

Shock absorber with variable damping profile

Apparatus is disclosed for protecting a structural object from the potentially harmful effects of a cyclic event such as an earthquake or high wind loads. A fluid spring is employed to stiffen the structural object and absorb kinetic energy stored by the spring. Fluid from the spring is exchanged with an accumulator where kinetic energy is dissipated as heat. A flow circuit regulates the exchange of fluid between the spring chamber and the accumulator chamber under controlled conditions to absorb the harmful effects of high external loads and to release the structural object when a high shock load is experienced.
