A utility meter includes a consumption measurement unit for generating consumption data, a meter processor, and a RTC for time stamping the consumption data to provide interval meter data during interval meter operation. A memory stores the interval meter data. The meter processor implements/initiates responsive to a power loss that suspends RTC operation, switching from interval to relative time operation where consumption data is stored as relative consumption data together with a relative time as relative meter data. Responsive power restoration and receiving a current time, the meter switches from relative time to interval meter operation. The restoration time is calculated using the current and an elapsed time since the restoration. The time of restoration and current time is used to generate calculated times. The consumption data from relative time operation is time stamped with the calculated times to provide time-corrected relative meter data that is stored to the memory.

A metering system for metering consumption of a commodity. The metering system includes a meter socket, a meter, and a controller. The meter socket has a tag with identification information. The meter includes a sensor configured to read the identification information from the tag of the meter socket and provide a signal indicative of the identification information from the tag. The processor is configured to receive the signal indicative of the identification information of the tag and associate the energy consumption data with the identification information of the tag. The voltage signals that may be measured include line to neutral voltages and line to line voltages. A novel method and device for measuring electrical parameters in an energy meter in an electrical system is described. The novel method samples an electrical energy signal and determines a relevant portion of the sampled electrical energy signal. The relevant portion of the electrical energy signal is then separately multiplied by a first and second reference waveform. The relevant portion may be reflective of a particular line cycle at a particular frequency of interest. In addition, other samples in the line cycle may be accumulated. The samples whose portions may be determined may be the first and/or last signal, while other sampled signals may be evaluated in whole.

Fractional sampling of electrical energy

The phase shift in an electronic energy meter is compensated for by obtaining temperature and frequency readings in the meter and using these readings in a digital signal processor (DSP) residing within the electronic energy meter. The frequency and temperature compensation is performed to each phase calibration and the result is stored in the DSP. To reduce the possible influence of noise in the system, the compensated DSP values are filtered to provide a smoothing of the data.

System and method for detecting flicker in an electrical energy supply

An apparatus for determining loss of reference voltage (indicating possible tampering) in a 2-element electronic meter that includes a processor for determining electrical power from voltage and current signals, and a display for indicating an operating status of the meter. To determine if the reference voltage of the meter in a 3-wire delta or network installation has been lost, a measurement of the phase angle difference between the two phases is made. If the phase difference is equal to a predetermined value, the meter indicates on the display that loss of reference voltage and possible tampering has taken place. The apparatus may further be adapted to determine a length of time that this condition has occurred such that the appropriate enforcement and billing agencies may be informed.

Apparatus and method for detecting tampering in a multiphase meter

A 2-element, three voltage connection electronic energy meter is disclosed for measuring 3-phase electrical energy supplied by a 4-wire delta service without external potential transformers. The meter employs non-isolating voltage sensors for sensing the line voltages and includes and an automatic service type detector and isolation detector. The meter generates voltage and phase angle measurements for each of the two voltages sensed by the meter. The service type detector compares the phase angles to automatically determine the service type supplying the electrical energy to the meter. The isolation detector compares the two voltages to automatically determine whether or not the installation includes external potential transformers. If the service type is a 4-wire delta service and no external potential transformers are used at the installation for isolating the voltage signals, the meter doubles the voltage measured over the first of the two elements when generating power measurements.

A system for determining the service type to which an energy meter having meter elements is connected. The system includes a memory for storing reference information relating to different service types. The system determines which meter elements of the energy meter are active, and then determines relative phase angles and phase voltages of the meter elements. The relative phase angles are determined in to be in an ABC or a CBA rotation. Power quality monitoring is used in determining the phase voltages. The relative phase angles and phase voltages are compared to the reference information to determine the service type. The reference information includes services and scaling information, a nominal service voltage, a programmable potential indicator threshold, and a maximum and a minimum tolerance with respect to the nominal service voltage.
