The present technology relates to fault-managed power (FMP), and particularly, to generating FMP in an industrial automation environment using single-pair Ethernet (SPE) cabling for use by DC motors. An FMP system may include a transmitter circuit and receiver circuits coupled together via a transmission link formed using SPE cable. The transmitter circuit can generate a FMP and transmit a pulsed signal having the FMP to the receiver circuits. The transmitter circuitry can also exchange data signals with the receiver circuits over a communication channel using the SPE cable. The receiver circuits can identify an expected power consumption of DC motors coupled to the receiver circuits and provide an indication of the expected power consumption to the transmitter circuit. The transmitter circuit can detect a fault based on a comparison between the transmitted FMP and the power consumption and terminate transmission of the FMP in response to detecting the fault.

For automatic device addressing, a processor configures each node device on a serial network for an order measurement. The processor further measures an order parameter for each of the node devices. The processor determines an order number of each of the node devices based on the order parameter for the node device.

For a bi-directional bus topology, a node connection includes two select line connections for a select line of a serial network. The select line is broken at the node connection. A bus direction module configures a first select line connection for an input line and a second select line connection for an output line in response to detecting a selection event. At least a portion of the bus direction module includes one or more of hardware and executable code, the executable code stored on a memory.

A multidrop cable may include multiple nodes electrically coupled thereon. The nodes may each include a respective PCB layer and a respective connector. The connector may provide connection between the transmission lines of the multidrop cable and the PCB layer. The PCB layer may include circuitry to reduce an induced noise of the multidrop cable by adding twist to the respective signals of the transmission lines. The PCB layer may also preserve the characteristic impedance of the multidrop cable by providing inductance in series between the respective signals of the transmission lines.
