A needle for a choke valve assembly includes a base portion formed from a first non-superhard material and a tip portion formed from a superhard material. The needle also includes a brazed connection coupling the tip portion to the base portion. The brazed connection includes an insert formed from a second non-superhard material, in which the second non-superhard material is harder than the first non-superhard material and softer than the superhard material. In addition, the brazed connection includes a shim disposed between the insert and the base portion, a first layer of brazing material disposed between the base portion and the shim, and a second layer of brazing material disposed between the shim and the insert.

Needle for a choke valve assembly

Interfacing surfaces of adjacent tiles in a downhole tool may combine to form a tortuous path therebetween. In various embodiments, this tortuous path may run generally parallel and/or perpendicular to a top surface of the tiles. One example of such a tortuous path may be created by a protrusion extending from an interfacing surface of one of the tiles that may fit snugly within a cavity receding into an interfacing surface of another of the tiles.

Tiling for downhole tool

A drill bit may include a bit body and at least two cones assemblies including at least two drive cylinders having at least two cones. The at least two cone assemblies are mounted on the bit body. The drill bit may also include an indexing mechanism coupled to the bit body and configured to rotate and lock at least one drive cylinder. A method of operating the drill bit may include providing fluid to the drill bit, rotating the drill string to drill formation, moving the indexing mechanism an axial distance within a central chamber of the drill bit, rotating the at least two indexable structures as the indexing mechanism moves, and locking the at least two indexable structures.

A mechanical bearing includes a hard bearing element and a support element affixed to the hard bearing element, with a joining element between the hard bearing element and the support element, the joining element being more flexible than the hard bearing element and the support element.

Hard bearing attachment and alignment systems, apparatus, and techniques

Aspects of the disclosure can relate to an apparatus including a first member having a first bearing surface formed from a hard material (e.g., a diamond-based material, such as a polycrystalline diamond material), and a second member coupled to an input shaft to translate (e.g., rotate, slide, etc.) with respect to the first member. The second member has a second bearing surface formed from a hard material, and the second bearing surface is to bear against the first bearing surface. In embodiments of the disclosure, the first and second members can be for devices including, but not necessarily limited to: solenoids, generators and/or motors (e.g., out-runner radial flux generators, axial flux generators, radial flux generators/motors, roller vane motors, etc.), gearboxes, rotary data swivels, digital actuators, filters (e.g., inner rotating filters), valves (e.g., proportional valves), sensors (e.g., pressure differential sensors), and so forth.

Systems and devices using hard bearings

A high-pressure pump comprising an elongated casing and a hollow interior formed along a central axis thereof. At least one partition may be axially fixed within the elongated casing such that it divides the hollow interior. First and second pressure differential devices may be disposed on opposite sides of the at least one partition and each have a rotary shaft extending there through. A first rotary shaft extending through the first pressure differential device may be axially fixed by the at least one partition and rotationally fixed to a second rotary shaft extending through the second pressure differential device. The high-pressure pump may be driven by a servomotor and used in a high-pressure press.

A downhole drill pipe may comprise a transducer disposed therein, capable of converting energy from flowing fluid into electrical energy. A portion of a fluid flowing through the drill pipe may be diverted to the transducer. After passing the transducer, the diverted portion of the fluid may be discharged to an exterior of the drill pipe. To generate electrical energy while not obstructing the main fluid flow from passing through the drill pipe, the transducer may be disposed within a lateral sidewall of the drill pipe with an outlet for discharging fluid exposed on an exterior of the lateral sidewall.

Downhole transducer assembly

Downhole drilling often requires passing drilling fluid containing water mixed with mud through a downhole drill pipe. Such drill pipe may comprise cavities therein for working units such as motors, generators, solenoids and the like. It may be desirable to lubricate and cool such working units with water from the drilling fluid, however, mud particulate may damage such devices. The present invention comprises various embodiments of a dynamic seal assembly designed to allow fluid communication between a cavity and a fluid flow while blocking certain particulate matter within the fluid flow from entering the cavity. The fluid communication may occur through and the particulate matter may be blocked by a defined clearance between two complementary surfaces that are movable relative to each other.

A submersible electrical machine includes a first magnetic package spaced axially from a second magnetic package, a first stator displaced axially from the first magnetic package by a first air gap, a second stator displaced axially from the second magnetic package by a second air gap. The electrical machine can be operated as a generator or as a motor. When operating as a generator, a turbine can rotate the magnetic packages relative to the stators in response to fluid flowing axially across the electrical machine.

Submersible electrical machine and method

A downhole sub having a first tubular housing with a first internal shoulder, a second tubular housing with a second internal shoulder, and a stabilizer assembly to be disposed between the first and second internal shoulders. The first and second tubular housings are configured to be threaded together, and the stabilizer assembly is configured to engage the first and second internal shoulders. A method of coupling tubular housings in a downhole sub in which a first tubular housing and a second tubular housing are threadably coupled, where the first tubular housing includes a first shoulder and the second tubular housing includes a second shoulder. A sleeve is interlocked with and inside the second tubular housing such that the sleeve is disposed between the first and second shoulders and includes a third shoulder, where the first shoulder is torqued against the third shoulder.

High-pressure high-temperature presses are commonly employed to create superhard materials used in such fields as road milling, mining and trenching, to breakup tough materials such as asphalt, concrete and rock. Many such presses comprise a plurality of piston assemblies that may act in concert to pressurize a cell. Such a cell may comprise a body with at least three canisters disposed therein, each comprising an axis passing through a center of the body. Such a configuration may allow for maximum planes of symmetry within the cell.

High-pressure high-temperature presses are commonly employed to create superhard materials used in such fields as road milling, mining and trenching, to breakup tough materials such as asphalt, concrete and rock. Many such presses comprise a plurality of piston assemblies that may act in concert to pressurize a cell. Such a cell may comprise a body with a plurality of canisters disposed therein and at least one unique heater element adjacent each of the canisters. Heat may be generated within such a press by forming an electrical circuit with the unique heater element and anvils surrounding the cell.

Individual resistance heating for high-pressure high-temperature cell

In one aspect of the invention, a high impact resistant tool includes a superhard material bonded to a cemented metal carbide substrate at a non-planar interface. The superhard material has a substantially pointed geometry with a sharp apex having a radius of curvature of 0.050 to 0.125 inches. The superhard material also has a thickness of 0.100 to 0.500 inches thickness from the apex to a central region of the cemented metal carbide substrate.

A downhole tool actuation system has a fluid path defined by a bore formed within a tubular body of a tool. A reciprocating sleeve is located within the bore and the sleeve has a segmented seat with a fluid by-pass. At least one seat segment is positioned by an outer diameter of the sleeve to complete the seat, and a relief is formed in a wall adjacent the outer diameter of the sleeve. When the seat is occupied by an obstruction, only a portion of the fluid path is obstructed and fluid impinging the obstruction causes the sleeve to move in the direction of flow until the at least one segment is relieved by the relief thereby releasing the obstruction.
