Hermetic terminal

A hermetic feed-through includes a housing body defining a hollow space, a plurality of conductive pins and a seal structure. The plurality of conductive pins extend through the hollow space. The seal structure is provided in the hollow space and includes a single-piece glass component. The single-piece glass component hermetically seals at least two conductive pins to the housing body and electrically insulates the at least two conductive pins from the housing body.

A hermetic terminal is disclosed as having a body including an exterior surface and a plurality of openings in the body accommodating a pin extending through each opening that is hermetically sealed and electrically isolated from the body. The terminal also includes a dielectric pin-isolating feature forming a barrier that increases the operative through-air spacing between the pins of the terminal. The power rating for the terminal is thereby increased without increasing the overall size of the terminal.

A power terminal feed-through incorporates a metallic body through which extend one or more current conducting pins that are hermetically sealed to the metallic body by a glass-to-metal seal. The metallic body includes an annular lip with a protrusion. During welding installation of the power terminal feed-through, the protrusion serves to assist in the welding process, better controlling the location and definition of the weld between the metallic body and a housing, and to focus the welding heat at the protrusion, thereby protecting the glass-to-metal seal. The glass-to-metal seal can be a single glass insert through which the current conducting pins extend, thereby reducing the pin circle diameter and the overall size of the power terminal feed-through.

An improved lower cost sight glass and a method for producing the same is disclosed, whereby the sight glass is made by placing a transparent component in secure contact with a metallic ring. The contact may optionally be effectuated by temporarily altering the relative dimensions of the metallic ring and the transparent component, placing the transparent component into the inner space of the metallic ring, and then reversing the altered relative dimensions of the metallic ring and the transparent component. A hermetic seal is formed between the transparent component and the metallic ring is by the application of an inorganic sealing compound.
