Visual inspection of alpha channel values is aided by displaying a partially transparent image rendered over an animated background pattern. The background pattern is user-specified or chosen automatically. The background pattern has colors, shapes, position, orientation, magnification, and distortion. The visual appearance of the background pattern is automatically altered, and the partially transparent image is redisplayed, this time rendered over the altered background pattern. The background pattern may scroll, rotate, change shape, pulse, morph shape, and/or change colors during animation. The background includes a checkerboard or another tessellation, a color gradient, a transparency heat map, a procedurally generated texture, and/or other patterns. A color identified in the partially transparent image may provoke use of a complementary color in the background. The image whose transparency is being visually inspected zooms independently of the background pattern. Animation of the background helps reveal unwanted transparency values, which the user edits as desired.

A materials trouble shooter is provided for use with 3D models in computer graphics. An error texture is displayed that is distinguishable from textures without errors. If a texture is missing or is applied incorrectly to the 3D model, an error texture is displayed using an error shader instead of a regular shader for the texture for which an error in loading or application has been detected.

Ink lag compensation techniques are described. In implementations, an input is recognized by a computing device as an ink stroke to be rendered on a display device of the computing device. An extension is predicted, by the computing device, to be applied to the ink stroke that is likely to be subsequently input in conjunction with the ink stroke. The ink stroke and the extension are output for concurrent display on the display device of the computing device.

Ink rendering techniques are described. In an implementation, an input is recognized by one or more modules that are executable on one or more processors of a computing device as an ink stroke to be rendered by a display device of the computing device. The ink stroke is built by the one or more modules using a strip of triangles and the strip of triangles is sent to a graphics processing unit to render the ink stroke.

Interrelated items in a complex item set (such as a set of components in a complex software architecture) may be difficult to present in a manner that facilitates an understanding and evaluation of the item set, due to the amount of information and the difficulty in automatically discerning the organization of the item set. A set of criteria may be utilized to form criterion groups to which items matching respective criteria may be automatically assigned. Further grouping assignments may be achieved by identifying an ungrouped item that is associated with a grouped item. Such techniques may be applied in many variations to yield a representation of the item set, and a presentation of the item set to a user, that aggregates similar items and interrelationships, thereby promoting an understanding and analysis of the structure and organization of the item set while reducing the user involvement in the generation of same.
