A downhole drilling tool, forming part of a subterranean drilling system, may include at least one plate secured to an exterior of an elongate body. Electronics may be disposed between the plate and the body to be protected by the plate while still readily accessible. A dynamic element may be radially extendable from the plate to engage an inner wall of a borehole being drilled. If this radially-extendable element becomes worn or damaged from this engagement, the plate may be replaced. More expensive components of the drilling tool may be contained within the elongate body, rather than the plate, thus reducing replacement frequency. Additionally, plates including unique features may be employed at different times without altering the underlying elongate body.

Downhole tools having radially extendable elements

A flow regulation system for downlink communication includes a fixed flow valve and a variable flow valve on a discharge line. A pressure sensor is located between the fixed flow valve and the variable flow valve. A sinusoidal communication flow pattern in the drilling fluid is generated by adjusting the position of the variable flow valve based on measured valve pressures from the pressure sensor.

Systems and methods for generating a downlink signal

A torsional damping system includes a housing having an interior space. An inertia ring is located in the interior space, and a torsion fluid is located between the inertia ring and the housing. The inertia ring is rotatably installed relative to the housing. As the housing oscillates, the inertia ring damps at least a portion of the oscillation. The torsional damping system may be included in a downhole tool or bottomhole assembly, and used to damp oscillations along a drill string or along the bottomhole assembly, including between a downhole motor and a cutting tool.

Inertia damping systems and methods

A flexible downhole component includes an upper connection for connecting the flexible downhole component to a first downhole tool and a lower connection for connecting the flexible downhole component to a second downhole tool. The flexible downhole component includes a flexible body disposed between the upper connection and the lower connection. The flexible downhole component includes an upper damping component and a lower damping component each configured to damp torsional oscillations.

Torsional damping and flexible components in downhole systems and methods

A bit used in a downhole environment has an active element that is movable relative to the bit. The bit is rotated in the downhole environment, and at least one downhole parameter is measured. The at least one downhole parameter is compared against a target parameter value, and when the at least one downhole parameter is beyond a threshold value of the target parameter value, the active element is selectively relative to the bit. Movement of the active element alters the proportion of the weight on the active element as compared to the other cutting structure of the bit. Changing the proportion of weight can be used to reduce the depth of cut of the cutting structure and to reduce or eliminate motor stall or stick-slip behavior.

Systems and methods of controlling downhole behavior

A downhole transducer assembly capable of being safely operated at a variety of pressures and depths may include a turbine rotatable by a fluid pressure differential rotationally fixed to a rotor in a generator. To reduce the rotational speed of the turbine and rotor, a pressure regulator may limit a fluid pressure differential by controlling the volumetric flow. One or more nozzles may be configured to automatically regulate a nozzle diameter, and therefore the pressure drop across the nozzle. A surge protector may be connected to the generator.

Downhole transducer assemblies and pressure range control therein

A downhole drilling apparatus, passing through a subterranean borehole, may mark an inner wall of the borehole with a marking element. A sensor, spaced axially from the marking element on the drilling apparatus, may subsequently sense the marking as it passes. A rate of penetration of the drilling apparatus may be calculated by dividing an axial distance, between the marking element and the sensor, by a time interval, between when the marking element marks the inner wall and when the marking is sensed by the sensor. Alternately, a second sensor, spaced axially from the first, may also sense the marking. A rate of penetration may then be calculated by dividing an axial distance, between the two sensors, by a time interval, between when the two sensors sense the marking.

Marking and sensing a borehole wall

A downhole transducer assembly capable of being safely operated at a variety of pressures and depths may include a turbine rotatable by a fluid pressure differential rotationally fixed to a rotor in a generator. To reduce the rotational speed of the turbine and rotor, a pressure regulator may limit a fluid pressure differential by controlling the volumetric flow. In other embodiments, one or more nozzles may be configured to automatically regulate a nozzle diameter, and therefore the pressure drop across the nozzle. In other embodiments, a surge protector may be connected to the generator.

Pressure range control in a downhole transducer assembly

A method for determining a rate of penetration of a drill bit during an earth drilling operation may comprise first urging an element to extend out from a working face of the drill bit. As drilling progresses, this extended element may then be forced back into the drill bit by an internal surface of a borehole being formed. A rate at which the element retracts back into the working face may be measured to aid in estimating a rate of penetration of the drill bit into the earth.

A sensor assembly may include a housing made of a non-magnetic material. The housing may define an interior chamber. A shaft may extend from the housing. A bearing may be positioned around the shaft. An impeller may be positioned around the shaft and the bearing, and the impeller may include a magnetized portion. A sensor may be positioned within the interior chamber and/or proximate the magnetized portion. The sensor may detect the magnetized portion of the impeller to sense a rate of rotation of the impeller. The rate of rotation of the impeller may correspond to changes in flow rate of the fluid. As the flow rate of the fluid, and the rate of rotation of the impeller change in predetermined manners, control signals may be conveyed to activate a tool.

Sensor activated downhole cutting tool

A drill bit forming a borehole in the earth may be urged sideways, creating a curve in the borehole, by a cross-sectional shape of the borehole. For example, a borehole with a cross-sectional shape comprising two circular arcs of distinct radii, one larger and one smaller than a gauge of the drill bit, may push the drill bit away from the smaller circular arc and into the larger circular arc. Forming a borehole with such circular arcs may be accomplished by extending a cutting element from a side of the drill bit for only a portion of a full rotation of the drill bit. The relative radii and angular ranges occupied by the circular arcs may affect a radius of curvature formed in the borehole. The radii and angular ranges occupied by these circular arcs may be adjusted by altering the timing of extension and retraction of the extendable cutting element.

Borehole cross-section steering

A drilling apparatus may alter a direction of travel of a drill bit as it forms a borehole in the earth by furnishing the borehole with a cross-sectional shape that urges the drill bit in a radial direction. Such a cross-sectional shape may comprise two circular arcs, one larger than the apparatus and one smaller. The apparatus may be urged away from the smaller circular arc and into the open space provided by the larger circular arc. Such an apparatus may comprise an axial body and a cutting element extendable in a single radial direction from an exterior of the axial body. Extension of the cutting element may allow it to engage and degrade an inner wall of the borehole. An abrasion-resistant gauge pad protruding from the exterior of the body may ride against the borehole wall and urge the body radially.

Unidirectionally extendable cutting element steering

Aspects of the disclosure can relate to an apparatus including a first member having a first bearing surface formed from a hard material (e.g., a diamond-based material, such as a polycrystalline diamond material), and a second member coupled to an input shaft to translate (e.g., rotate, slide, etc.) with respect to the first member. The second member has a second bearing surface formed from a hard material, and the second bearing surface is to bear against the first bearing surface. In embodiments of the disclosure, the first and second members can be for devices including, but not necessarily limited to: solenoids, generators and/or motors (e.g., out-runner radial flux generators, axial flux generators, radial flux generators/motors, roller vane motors, etc.), gearboxes, rotary data swivels, digital actuators, filters (e.g., inner rotating filters), valves (e.g., proportional valves), sensors (e.g., pressure differential sensors), and so forth.
