Methods and apparatus for accelerated wear testing of prosthetic heart valves apply non-sinusoidal pressure waveforms. The waveforms may maintain a threshold reverse pressure for a desired duration while limiting a peak reverse pressure. Apparatus may include a fluid impeller such as a bellows or a piston driven by an actuator having a position controlled by a motion control system. The apparatus may include a pressure control system comprising one or more bypass channels and bypass valves controlling a resistance of the bypass channels to fluid flow. The bypass valves may be controlled in real time.

Heart valve testing apparatus and methods

A foot, toe, and ankle exercise device provides variable resistance to movements of the foot, ankle and toes in multiple directions. Embodiments of the device comprise a flexible forefoot support to allow for full toe and foot range of motion. Resistance is provided by resistance members that may comprise elastic banding or tubing. The forefoot support may be suspended by the resistance members.

Portable foot and ankle exercise apparatus and associated methods

Systems and methods are disclosed for improving the resolution and quality of an image formed by signals from an array of receivers. Multiple receivers introduce variations in arrival times that can be less than the period of an operating signal, and also less than the period associated with a sampling operation. Thus, multiple receivers allow sampling of fine features of reflected signals that would be considered beyond the resolution associated with the operating signal. Use of multiple receivers also provides an effective sampling rate that is greater than the sampling rate of an individual receiver. Similar advantages can be obtained using multiple transmitters. Such advantageous features can be used to obtain high resolution images of objects in a medium in applications such as ultrasound imaging. Sub-Nyquist sampling is discussed. Accounting for the effects of refraction on pathlengths as a signal passes between two regions of different sound speed allows improved calculation of focus distances. Extending the analysis to account for additional layers or sub-layers allows further improvement.

Systems and methods for ultrasound imaging

A flexible fluid filled actuator has an elastic bladder and a guide surrounding the bladder. The guide has asymmetrical elastic properties. When the bladder is inflated the guide directs the bladder to expand preferentially in a selected direction or directions. The actuator has utility in the traction and/or unloading of portions of the body. A fluid-filled traction apparatus is disclosed which has particular advantages in spinal unloading.

Fluid operated actuators and pneumatic unloading orthoses

A sensor assembly for monitoring physiological characteristics interfaces to a subject's ear. The sensor assembly has a projection that projects into the subject's concha. The projection may have a notch to accommodate the subject's anti-tragus. A clip connected to the projection holds a sensor against the subject's lobule. The sensor may comprise a pulse-oximetry-type sensor.

Ear sensor assembly

An apparatus for ultrasound scanning of the eye is provided comprising a virtual center translocation mechanism that facilitates precise arcuate motion of an ultrasonic transducer to maintain focal distance from the eye and to maintain normality of the ultrasound beam with surfaces of the eye. The invention also provides a radius adjust mechanism for changing the radius of ultrasound scanning to facilitate positioning of the transducer focal point on selected surfaces of the eye. Centration optics are also provided, for aligning the ultrasound transducer with the Purkinje (or other optical or geometric) axis of a patient's eye. In addition the invention provides a hygiene barrier eyeseal for protection of the patient from disease propagation.

An apparatus for ultrasound scanning of the eye is provided comprising a virtual center translocation mechanism that facilitates precise arcuate motion of an ultrasonic transducer to maintain focal distance from the eye and to maintain normality of the ultrasound beam with surfaces of the eye. The invention also provides a radius adjust mechanism for changing the radius of ultrasound scanning to facilitate positioning of the transducer focal point on selected surfaces of the eye. Centration optics are also provided, for aligning the ultrasound transducer with the Purkinje (or other optical or geometric) axis of a patient's eye.

Planar magnetic transducer

A fluid control valve has a valve member which, on closing creates a stagnation zone between the valve member and a surface within the valve. In the stagnation zone fluid pressure is greater than it is in an adjacent constriction zone. This causes the valve to close slowly, thereby reducing the likelihood that water hammer will occur on closure of the valve. The design of the valve member also reduces resonances which can cause annoying noises and premature wear. A flow restriction chamber further slows closure of the valve. The fluid control valve may be controlled by a conventional 3-way pilot valve. Preferably the fluid control valve is used with a pilot valve according to the invention having a rocker member which, on actuation, first closes an inlet valve member and then opens an outlet valve member. The pilot valve may be used in other situations where a 3-way valve is needed.

Valve control system

A planar magnetic acoustical transducer including a diaphragm with electrical circuit carrying conductors having a width substantially equal to a combined width of a plurality of magnetic fields created by equally spaced opposing rows of permanent magnets carried by opposing frame sections between which the diaphragm is mounted such that substantially the entire active area of the diaphragm is driven to create a smooth frequency response. The electrical circuit includes generally parallel segments which are aligned within the magnetic fields created by the rows of opposing magnets and are spaced at a distance relative to one another generally not less than a distance equal to a width of pole elements which are integrally formed with the frame sections and which pole elements are spaced intermediate each of the rows of magnets so as to be in an opposing relationship with one another on opposite sides of the diaphragm.

A method and apparatus for high speed and uniform manufacture and assembly of acoustical diaphragms having electrical conductor circuits applied thereto to frame components used with acoustic transducers wherein a web of diaphragm material having a plurality of spaced circuit carrying diaphragm sections applied thereto is moved relative to an applicator station wherein each section of the web of diaphragm material is placed under a predetermined tension and a frame component is bonded to the tensioned section, afterwhich the section of diaphragm material is severed from the web of diaphragm material.
