An example temperature sensing device includes an air distribution inlet through which primary air is blown into via an environmental control system, a cabin air inlet through which secondary air enters from a passenger area of a fuselage and the cabin air inlet is coupled to the air distribution inlet through a duct and the secondary air is passively drawn into the cabin air inlet and to the duct due to a pressure difference present in the duct, and a temperature sensor coupled to the duct and positioned downstream of the cabin air inlet along an airflow path of the secondary air so as to be exposed to the secondary air drawn in through the cabin air inlet and flowing through the duct.

A diverter duct for a ventilation system includes a main body defining an inner surface, a first portion including an inlet, a second portion located downstream of the first portion, a third portion including an outlet, an opening located between the first portion and the third portion, and an air deflector positioned within the main body downstream of the first portion to deflect a portion of the air from the inlet of the main body towards the opening. A first contoured section is formed in the first portion of the main body. The first contoured section may direct air received from the inlet towards the opening at a first operating condition. A method of installing the diverter duct includes coupling the inlet with an upstream fan, and coupling the outlet with an outlet fan, such that selective operation of the inlet and outlet fans cause vary airflow though the outlet or the opening.

An apparatus and system and method for mixing airflow and draining condensate in a duct exposed to sub-freezing air are disclosed. An example mixing duct apparatus includes a recirculation duct and a pack duct having a first end and a second end. The first end of the pack duct is coupled to a side of the recirculation duct. The pack duct has a lip that extends into an airflow passage defined by the recirculation duct. This lip defines a flow channel for condensate in the recirculation duct to flow beneath sub-freezing air entering the recirculation duct from the pack duct to decrease ice build-up in the pack duct.

An exemplary ventilation air mixer includes a branch air duct and a trim air mixer. The branch air duct has an inlet that is configured to be coupled to a takeoff port of a main air source duct. The branch air duct has multiple holes arranged about a wall of a mixing portion. The trim air mixer at least partially surrounds the branch air duct and forms a cavity extending from the inlet of the branch air duct to at least the mixing portion. The trim air mixer has a trim air source duct connection coupled at an angle about a midsection. The angle is substantially acute relate to a longitudinal axis of the branch air duct such that trim air entering into the trim air mixer via the trim air source duct connection is directed toward the inlet of the branch air duct.

A flow-straightener apparatus and associated systems for converting a rotating airflow into a substantially longitudinally directed airflow is presented. A first annular frame is provided and a second annular frame arranged concentrically within the first annular frame. A plurality of flow-straightener vanes are also provided, each having a first end coupled to an interior surface of the first annular frame and a second end coupled to an exterior surface of the second annular frame. The plurality of flow-straightener vanes each also have a leading edge and a trailing edge and each vane has a curved segment.

An apparatus is disclosed to carry out a humidification process which includes the steps of blowing hot air upwardly through a plurality of tubes (34) submerged in a body of water (8) but which terminate above the water level (16), aspirating water into hot jets of air, atomizing the water (8) by the action of the air (17) on the water, evaporatively combining the mixture (17a) of water and air, mechanically separating the excess water droplets out of the air stream (17a) in a baffle (60), and discharging the humidified air (17b) into a duct (12) leading to a compartment (22) to be conditioned.

In the preferred mode, an apparatus is disclosed to carry out a vehicular humidification process which includes the steps of bubbling pressurized hot air (17)(e.g., trim air) upwardly through a plurality of tubes (34) submerged in a body of water, evaporatively combining the inlet air (17) and water (8) in a venturi (34b) which has its divergent walls at a predetermined angle (8) and its exit above the water level (16), mechanically separating the excess droplets in a baffle (60), in-line filtering (26) the humid air (17b) and discharging the filtered air into a duct leading to a compartment (22) to be conditioned (e.g., the flight deck of an aircraft). Further steps include maintaining a uniform level of dissolved minerals in the water sump including swirling (145) the water, mixing outlet air with other air (12a) including bypassed (20) dry inlet air, recirculating (53) humid outlet air to the inlet, draining (9) the water body (8) when overfilled, periodically draining (14 ) the water body to eliminate dissolved minerals and controlling (37) the water level (38, 39). All variable parameters are sensed (15, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 88, 98) and automatically controlled (11). There are no moving parts except a fan (51, 90), when required by a mode, and the control valves (13, 14, 18, 19, 27, 80, 86, 87). Numerous alternative embodiments are presented.
