Methods of manufacturing a low-profile brace for treating a ligament injury are provided. Among other features, a method of manufacturing includes providing a liner and permanently attaching provided first and second metal components configured to be formed to the shape of a thigh and a calf of the patient; and providing upper and lower lateral rigid members, each having a three-dimensional structure comprising a recessed portion extending along a length of the respective lateral rigid member. The recessed portion includes a substantially y-shaped portion that is: disposed at a proximal end of the lower lateral rigid member or at a distal end of the upper lateral rigid member, and further raised outwardly away from the patient's leg from adjacent portions of the recessed channel that separate the substantially y-shaped portion from a perimeter of the lower or upper lateral rigid member. Related methods of use are also provided.

Low profile knee brace and method of using same

A low profile, lightweight hinged knee brace is provided for use in providing support to individuals having injuries to their ligaments. The brace includes an upper component that can be formed to fit the thigh of a wearer. The brace further includes a lower component that can likewise be formed to custom fit the calf of the wearer. Both the upper and lower components are encapsulated in a continuous liner. Between the upper and lower components are inflexible rigid members constructed of a lightweight yet durable material to provide strength and rigidity to the brace. The brace is constructed from a two dimensional structure which allows for malleability coupled to a formed three dimensional structure which provides stiffness and enhanced protection of the knee. Methods of treating injuries to a ligament of the knee are similarly provided.

A hinge assembly for an orthopedic brace includes, among other things, an outer plate adapted to fit over a lateral side of a hinge to protect mechanical components of the hinge. The outer plate includes an inner surface and an outer surface, and a connector housing formed below the outer surface.

A building block toy set has first and second blocks each having a first connection device at the upper end and a second connection device at the lower end which is releasably mateable with the first connection device on the other block, whereby the first block is connectable on top of the second block in a first configuration and the second block is connectable on top of the first block in a second configuration. A hinge assembly is provided for an orthopedic knee brace. The knee brace includes upper and lower support arms. The hinge assembly includes a hinge plate and first and second gear members pivotally connected to the hinge plate. The first gear member is coupled for rotation with the upper support arm and has an articulation surface adjacent a surface of the upper support arm. The second gear member is coupled for rotation with the lower support arm and has an articulation surface adjacent a surface of the lower support arm. The hinge assembly allows medial/lateral articulation of the upper and lower support arms in a plane substantially perpendicular to a plane of rotation of the first and second gear members.

Embodiments of the knee brace disclosed herein provide a combination of external ligament support and/or relief from pain caused by osteoarthritis with patellofemoral support. The brace includes a rigid frame and a flexible strap configured to extend across the wearer's patella to provide anterior loading thereto. The strap is operatively secured at either end to components of the rigid frame, thereby providing maximum leverage for applying force to the wearer's patella. In some embodiments, the strap includes a removable and adjustable buttress for directly contacting the wearer's patella. The patellar strap provides dynamic loading to the patella through the wearer's range of motion for relief of patellofemoral dysfunction, such as patellar shift, subluxation and dislocation, and malalignments such as patella alta, patella baja, tilt and glide. In some embodiments, a conversion kit is provided for converting a rigid brace frame into a knee brace capable of providing patellofemoral support to a wearer's knee. The kit includes at least a patellar strap and at least one tab for securing the strap to the rigid frame.

A motion controlling hinge for an orthopedic brace is provided. The hinge includes an actuator secured to one arm, and at least one spring member. As the arm with the actuator pivots in a first direction, at a predetermined flexion angle the actuator applies a force to the spring member, causing the spring member to flex. The spring member exerts a force on the actuator tending to bias the actuator away from the spring member, and tending to bias the arm in a second direction opposite the first direction. A movable fulcrum enables adjustment of a force exerted by the spring member on the actuator. A variety of differently sized adapters are securable to the actuator. The size of the adapter determines the flexion angle at which the spring member first exerts force on the actuator.

A variety of differently sized adapters are securable to the actuator. The size of the adapter determines the flexion angle at which the spring member first exerts force on the actuator. In some embodiments, the hinge includes an 'ON'/'OFF' switch that enables a user to disengage biasing force provided by the spring member. When the switch occupies the &#x201c;OFF&#x201d; position, the hinge is freely pivotable to a maximum extension angle.

A knee brace hinge deflector is provided for preventing interference and/or locking of the medial hinges of bilateral knee braces. The hinge deflector includes a shell having rounded surfaces for encasing a first medial hinge assembly and deflecting a second medial hinge assembly of bilaterally worn knee braces.

A brace hinge is provided having an adjustable pressure-applying assembly mounted to an inside of the hinge. A brace including the hinge can apply pressure to a joint in a medial or lateral direction. The hinge includes anterior and posterior apertures containing anterior and posterior adjustment members that control a position and orientation of the pressure-applying assembly relative to the hinge. Through selective adjustment of the adjustment members, the hinge can apply greater pressure to an anterior portion of the joint than to a posterior portion of the joint, and vice versa. A method of treating a joint using a brace including such a hinge is also provided.
