Disclosed herein is an outboard motor comprising a propulsion unit including a lower unit having port and starboard sides and comprising a drive shaft housing having an upper end, a power head including an engine fixedly attached to said upper end of said drive shaft housing, and an engine cover assembly comprising a starboard lower cover member extending downwardly to said lower end of said drive shaft housing and including an inwardly open recess, a port lower cover member extending downwardly to said lower end of said drive shaft housing and including an inwardly open recess, and means connecting together said port and starboard cover members independently of said lower unit and in surrounding covering relation to said drive shaft housing, and means resiliently supporting said lower cover members on said lower unit and including rubber mounts respectively extending from said port and starboard sides of said lower unit and into said inwardly open recesses of said lower cover members.

Outboard motor cover assembly

Disclosed herein is an outboard motor comprising a propulsion unit including a first member movable vertically to actuate a transmission in response to such vertical movement, a second member rotatably supported by the propulsion unit and adapted to be rotated by an operator either directly or indirectly, and a connection for detachably connecting the first and second members to effect vertical movement of the first member in response to rotation of the second member, which connection includes an aperture in the first member, a stud fixedly extending from the second member for movement in common therewith and received in the aperture, a resilient member fixed to the second member for movement in common therewith and including a part movable relative to the second member between an interfering position wherein the part is engagable with the first member to prevent withdrawal of the stud from the aperture and a spaced position affording removal of the stud from the aperture, a tab connected to the resilient member and adapted for actuation by an operator to deflect the part away from the interfering position, and a stop fixed to the second member for movement in common therewith and for preventing deflection of the part beyond the spaced position in the direction from the interfering position.

A marine propulsion device comprising a propulsion unit adapted to be mounted on the transom of a boat for pivotal movement relative to the transom about a generally horizontal tilt axis, and about a vertical steering axis, the propulsion unit including a rotatably mounted propeller, and an engine drivingly connected to the propeller, a tiller arm connected to the propulsion unit, a contractable and extendible hydraulic assembly including a cylinder connected to one of the propulsion unit and the transom, a piston slideably received in the cylinder and dividing the cylinder into opposite first and second chambers, and a piston rod having one end fixedly connected to the piston and an opposite end extending outwardly of the cylinder and being connected to the other of the propulsion unit and the transom, a valve for alternatively permitting and preventing fluid flow from the first chamber to the second chamber, and a lever mounted on the tiller arm for actuating the valve.

Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device comprising a propulsion unit including a gear case rotatably supporting a propeller shaft adapted to carry a propeller, a transmission in the gear case operably connected to the propeller shaft, a support having a bore, a link including a first side portion having a first and second spaced apertures, a second side portion extending in spaced parallel relation to the first link side portion and including first and second spaced apertures in alignment with the first and second spaced aperture in the first link side portion, which second aperture in the second link side portion has a smaller diameter than the second aperture in the first link side portion, a bolt comprising a head portion having a transverse dimension and engaging the first link side portion, a threaded portion extending in the second aperture in the second link side portion and threadedly engaged with the second link side portion, and a barrel portion connecting the head portion and the threaded portion and having a diameter greater than the threaded portion and less than the transverse dimension of the head portion and including a first end adjacent the head portion and extending through the second aperture in the first link side portion, a second end adjacent the threaded portion and engaging the second link side portion, and a central portion intermediate the first and second ends, a first member adapted to be manually manipulated, rotatably extending in the bore, and being non-rotatably received in the first apertures in first and second link side portions, and a second member operably connected to the transmission and including and end portion having an aperture rotatably receiving the central portion of the barrel portion.

A marine propulsion lower unit including a gear case supporting a propeller shaft adapted to carry a propeller, which gear case has an upper surface including therein a cylindrical well defined by cylindrical peripheral wall and a bottom wall having therein an axial bore, a combined shift rod bushing and gear case seal assembly comprising a hub having an axis and axially spaced first and second ends, which hub also includes therein an axial bore extending from the first end, and which hub also includes therein a counter bore extending from the second end, and communicating with the axial bore in coaxial relation thereto, a flange extending from the hub and received in the well in the gear case, a pair of attachment arms extending from the hub in transverse radially outward relation to the axis of the hub and fixedly connected to the gear case, a plug member received in the counter bore and having an axial bore communicating with the axial bore in the hub, a shift rod extending through the axial bore in the plug member and through the axial bore in the hub, a first seal between the flange and the gear case, and a second seal between the plug member and each of the hub and the shift rod.

An assembly for mounting a marine propulsion unit on the transom of a boat, the assembly comprising a transom bracket adapted to be fixedly mounted on the transom, the transom bracket having mounted thereon a tilt pin and including bores permitting selective location of the tilt pin in a plurality of fixed positions relative to the transom bracket, a swivel bracket mounted on the transom bracket for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally horizontal tilt axis, an extendible and contractable linkage having a first end pivotally connected to the tilt pin and a second end pivotally connected to the swivel bracket, and a mechanism for selectively and alternatively extending and contracting the linkage for moving the swivel bracket between an operating position and a raised position.
