A conveyor comprises laterally spaced apart lifting/holding slats () and laterally spaced apart conveying slats () between the lifting/holding slats (). The conveying slats () are advanced in a first direction for conveying a load and are retracted in a second direction for returning them to a start position. The lifting/holding slats () have lower portions () which reciprocate and upper portions () which move up and down. Cams () operate in response to longitudinal movement of the lower portions () to raise and lower the upper portions ().

An inflatable bladder () is positioned between the top () of a lower slat () and the top () of an upper slat (). An air supply/exhaust conduit () extends upwardly from a transverse manifold () to the inflatable bladders (). Flanges () on the lower slat () contact flanges () on the upper slat () to stop upward movement of the upper slat ().
