A latch for use in a window comprising a bottom sash mounted in a window frame, the latch comprising a housing comprising a top wall, a bottom wall, a pair of opposed sidewalls and a rear wall. A top edge of the rear wall and a rear edge of each sidewall define a rear aperture. A front edge of the top wall, the bottom wall and each of the sidewalls defines a front aperture, the front aperture and the rear aperture opening into a bolt cavity defined by the housing. A bolt is slidably received by the housing, the bolt comprising a body with a front portion and a rear portion. The body is slidably received in the bolt cavity between a first position in which the front portion of the bolt is extended outwardly through the front aperture and the rear portion of the body engages an outer surface of the housing, and a second position in which the rear portion is disengaged from the housing. The rear portion of the bolt extends outwardly through the rear aperture in both the first and second positions.

Window latch

A latch for use in a window, the latch including a faceplate, a pair of opposed sidewalls, each sidewall defining a pawl mounting recess, a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls, an aperture defined by the faceplate that opens into a first cavity defined by the housing, and a pair of mounting arms disposed within the first cavity. Each mounting arm has a distal end extending both toward the face plate and inwardly toward a longitudinal center plane of the housing. A pawl is pivotably received in the first recess, the pawl including a top surface, an engagement surface, and a pair of mounting pins pivotally received in the pawl mounting recesses. The distal ends of the mounting arms engage the pawl adjacent a respective mounting pin such that the mounting pins are pivotably secured in the pawl mounting recesses.

A locking device for countering the force exerted by a spring balance while a window sash is in a tilt position or removed from a tilt position in a window frame, includes a shoe and a sash pin, the shoe engaging the walls of a jamb or jambliner when the window sash is tilted or removed from a tilt position, and the sash pin having a tab for preventing disengagement from the shoe during installation in a window frame. The shoe includes a pair of arms, one of which terminates in a barb and the other of which terminates in an angled edge, such that upon rotation, the shoe forms a wedge within a jamb or jambliner. The shoe further includes a plurality of prongs disposed between the arms for retaining the sash pin, and a bore for retaining an attachment mechanism associated with a spring balance. In response to tilting of the window sash away from the vertical axis of the jamb or jambliner, the locking device assumes a locked position as the sash pin rotates the shoe, and the barb and the angled edge engage the walls of the jamb or jambliner. Once engaged, the shoe becomes wedged within the jamb or jambliner such that the shoe is locked in place and effectively counters the forces exerted thereon by the spring balance.

Locking device for full tilt windows

A block and tackle balance disposed between a jambliner and a window sash includes a spring and a non-rotating pulley system. A head block is disposed on a rod for attaching the balance to the jambliner and securing one end of the spring, and a slide block is disposed at about the midpoint of the rod for securing the other end of the spring. The slide block acts in combination with a base block and a pulley cord, to create the non-rotating pulley system. The slide block and the base block each have at least one cord-receiving channel formed in a raised u-shaped member, for slidably receiving the pulley cord. The base block further includes a bore for securing an end of the pulley cord, and is coupled via the pulley cord to a shoe, which moves in response to movement of the window sash. As the shoe moves, the cord slides within the channels, and the slide block moves toward the base block. The displacement of the slide block relative to the fixed head block, results in a change in the length of the spring such that the spring supports the new position of the window sash.
