A method is provided for reducing crosstalk problems in digital subscriber loop systems. The problems are associated with a second receiver on a second loop responding to a signal from a first transmitter on a first loop. The signal is actually destined for a first receiver and is coupled between the first transmitter and the second receiver as a crosstalk signal. The method includes the step of transmitting a masking signal from a second transmitter to the second receiver for masking said crosstalk signal.

Methods for reducing power required for transmitting a signal from a first transceiver to a second transceiver are described. The methods comprise the steps of estimating an excess amount of power used by the first transceiver for transmitting the signal, reducing the first transceiver's power use by the excess amount of power to a reduced power level, and transmitting the signal from the first transceiver using the reduced power level. The reduced power level achieves a transmission rate of the signal within a predefined tolerance of its preferable rate.

Apparatus and method of loop and rate dependent power cutback

A system is provided for synchronizing a PSTN clock and a DSL clock. The system comprises a PSTN interface for transmitting and receiving voiceband samples, a data DSL transceiver for modulating and demodulating data to and from DSL samples, a synchronization circuit for synchronizing the voiceband samples and the data samples, and a converter for converting the synchronized voiceband and DSL samples between analog and digital formats. The synchronization circuit synchronizes the voiceband and the data samples for conversion by the same converter.

System and method for synchronizing sample rates of voiceband channels and a DSL interface channel

Method of reducing transmission power across a loop in a discrete multitone communication system. A first signal to noise ratio (SNR) is estimated for a signal transmitted across the loop. A second SNR is estimated for a signal across the loop, the second SNR signal being estimated exclusive of a predetermined portion of the first SNR. A power cutback scaling factor is determined in accordance with the first SNR, the second SNR, and a predefined maximum SNR degradation amount. The transmission power is scaled in accordance with said scaling factor for reducing said transmission power. In such a manner, fine gains are computed such that the transmit power is reduced without significantly affecting the achieved data rate.

A method for establishing communication in an ADSL subscriber loop, the method comprising the steps of determining that showtime cannot be entered during initialization of communication between the modems; requesting entry into a diagnostic mode by one of the modems upon the determining; diagnosing line conditions as being unable to support communication at a predetermined standard; and establishing communication at a standard lower than the predetermined standard.

Loop diagnostic mode for ADSL modems

Combined plain old telephone system (POTS) and digital subscriber loop (DSL) line card capable of suppressing low frequency transients. The line card includes the following elements. A DSL receive path receives DSL data from a loop. A POTS receive path receives POTS data from the loop. A combined POTS and DSL transmit path transmits POTS and DSL data to the loop. An impedance generator is coupled between the POTS receive path and the combined POTS and DSL transmit path for synthesizing impedance for signals in the combined POTS and DSL transmit path. A low frequency detector selectively applies a high pass filter to an output of the impedance generator for filtering the low frequency transients. Further, a clipped signal detector and a variable pole high pass filter are provided in the POTS receive path. The clipped signal detector in the POTS receive path triggers a switch that discharges stored transient energy in the receive path. The variable pole high pass filter in the POTS receive path is modified during ringing and hook switch activity, by the line card controller, in order to attenuate transient signals.

A telephone terminal having handsfree functionality is provided with an audio system which controls echo return loss while permitting virtual full-duplex operation. The system, which has a variolosser in both the transmit and receive path and an acoustic echo canceller, also has a complementary variolosser which introduces additional echo return loss only when required and as a function of the state of the system.

A system and method for dynamically optimizing the analog gain for a microphone in a telephone terminal operable in handsfree mode. The system makes use of a process whereby a relatively inexpensive analog to digital converter is used to meet gain requirements so as to accommodate the loudest echo through transmit path while maintaining an acceptable signal to noise ratio for the quietest talker. The system digital signal processor in conjunction with speech activity detection means is used to provide an optimum microphone gain under all circumstances.
