Disclosed herein are embodiments of rapidly solidified alloys that comprise aluminum, a rare earth element, one or more additional alloying elements, such as aluminum, and an optional additive component. The alloy embodiments exhibit a unique microstructure as compared to microstructures obtained from other alloys that are not rapidly cooled. The disclosed aluminum-rare earth element alloys also exhibit improved mechanical properties without the need for post-processing heat treatments and further do not exhibit substantial coarsening.

Rapidly solidified aluminum-rare earth element alloy and method of making the same

The present disclosure relates to an additive manufacturing system. The system incorporates a nozzle in communication with a quantity of feedstock material including granular metal powder particles. The nozzle is configured to deposit the granular metal powder particles on at least one of a build plate or a previously formed material layer, to form at least one layer of a part. The system also incorporates a magnetic field generator subsystem for producing a magnetic field configured to orient the granular metal powder particles in a desired orientation before fusing of the granular metal powder particles occurs.

System and method for multimaterial powder bed patterning for use in additive manufacturing

A magnetic shielding material includes a material comprising manganese bismuth (MnBi) and tungsten (W), where a ratio of MnBi:W is in a range of 50:50 to about 70:30. A radiation shielding product includes a part including manganese bismuth (MnBi) and tungsten (W), and a plurality of layers having a defined thickness in a z-direction, wherein each layer extends along an x-y plane perpendicular to the z-direction. At least some of the plurality of layers form a functional gradient in the z-direction and/or along the x-y plane, and the functional gradient is defined by a first layer comprising a ratio of MnBi:W being less than 100:0 and an nth layer above the first layer comprising a ratio of MnBi:W greater than 0:100.

Aluminum-cerium-manganese alloy embodiments for metal additive manufacturing

The disclosure concerns methods for making a composition comprising a light metal and an intermetallic comprising the light metal and a light rare earth element. The composition also may include a plurality of nanoparticles comprising an oxide of the light metal. A system is disclosed for printing a component. The system may have a nozzle controlled for movement within a plane. The nozzle may be configured to dispense a molten metal. A substrate may be positioned within a reservoir. The substrate may receive the molten metal to form the component in a printing operation. A heated barrier material in a molten state may be contained within the reservoir for forming a liquid barrier between an atmosphere and the substrate. The nozzle has a tip which is submerged within the liquid barrier while dispensing the molten metal during the printing operation. The liquid barrier forms a barrier between an atmosphere in a vicinity of the substrate and the substrate.

System and method for controlling oxidation of metals during freeform casting

A bulk high performance permanent magnet comprising a neodymium-iron-boron core having an outer surface, and a coercivity-enhancing element residing on at least a portion of said outer surface, with an interior portion of said neodymium-iron-boron core not having said coercivity-enhancing element therein. Also described herein is a method for producing the high-coercivity bulk permanent magnet, the method comprising: (i) depositing a coercivity-enhancing element on at least a portion of an outer surface of a neodymium-iron-boron core substrate to form a coated permanent magnet; and (ii) subjecting the coated permanent magnet to a pulse thermal process that heats said outer surface to a substantially higher temperature than an interior portion of said neodymium-iron-boron core substrate, wherein said substantially higher temperature is at least 200&#xb0; C. higher than said interior portion and is of sufficient magnitude to induce diffusion of said coercivity-enhancing element below said outer surface but outside of said interior portion.

Neodymium-iron-boron magnet with selective surface modification, and method of producing same

A cast alloy includes aluminum and from about 5 to about 30 weight percent of at least one material selected from the group consisting of cerium, lanthanum, and mischmetal. The cast alloy has a strengthening AlXintermetallic phase in an amount in the range of from about 5 to about 30 weight percent, wherein X is at least one of cerium, lanthanum, and mischmetal. The AlXintermetallic phase has a microstructure that includes at least one of lath features and rod morphological features. The morphological features have an average thickness of no more than 700 um and an average spacing of no more than 10 um, the microstructure further comprising an eutectic microconstituent that comprises more than about 10 volume percent of the microstructure.

Castable high-temperature Ce-modified Al alloys

According to one embodiment, a system for detecting and identifying gases includes a piezoresistive microcantilever transducer, wherein dissipation of heat from the piezoresistive microcantilever into one or more gases is measured by changes in an electrical resistance of the piezoresistor, a vibrating microcantilever transducer, wherein shifts are measured in resonant frequency of the vibrating microcantilever due to viscous damping thereof by the one or more gases, and a subsystem for correlating the measured resistance changes and the resonant frequency shifts to the one or more gases. In another embodiment, a method for detecting and identifying one or more gases includes determining dissipation of heat from a microcantilever into one or more gases, and determining shifts in resonant frequency of the microcantilever due to viscous damping thereof by the one or more gases. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are also described according to more embodiments.
