Fatigue fuse mounting systems and methods are discussed in this application. It is advantageous in the field of structural monitoring for fatigue fuses that are engineered to break in sequence to both be mounted near each other and also to work toward ensuring the fatigue fuses all undergo similar load cycling. Simply sticking a set of fatigue fuses to a structure can result in each fatigue fuse from an engineered set undergoing different load cycling, which can reduce their effectiveness. Thus, fatigue fuse mounting systems&#x2014;and methods of implementing the systems&#x2014;are contemplated in this application. The system includes a structural frame and a fatigue fuse mounting cartridge. These components work together to ensure that each fatigue fuse in a set undergoes more uniform load cycling, thereby improving structural monitoring performance.

Fatigue fuse mounting systems and methods

An antenna apparatus utilizing bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonances to transfer dynamic strain across multiple layers, which include piezoelectric layers coupled to magnetostrictive material layers. In at least one embodiment, a piezoelectric layer is coupled to a magnetostrictive layer to which another layer having similar acoustic properties as the piezoelectric layer is coupled as an inertial buffer. These multiple layers comprise a strain media to provide a vertical multiferroic coupling which couples electric field, magnetic field, and mechanical fields. Electrodes are coupled to excite one of the piezoelectric layers for injecting acoustic waves into the structure from which electromagnetic radiation is generated out of the plane.

Bulk acoustic wave mediated multiferroic antennas

A method of fabricating a multiferroic antenna element may include providing a electroelastic substrate to transform mechanical oscillations into an acoustic wave, providing a resonator assembly on a surface of the electroelastic substrate where the resonator assembly includes a plurality of magnetoelastic resonators that transform an electromagnetic wave into mechanical oscillations corresponding to a frequency of the electromagnetic wave, and providing an interdigitated electrode assembly at a portion of the electroelastic substrate to convert the acoustic wave into an electrical signal preserving information associated with the frequency of the electromagnetic wave.

Multiferroic surface acoustic wave antenna

A magnetoelectric composite device having a free (i.e. switchable) layer of ferromagnetic nanocrystals mechanically coupled a ferroelectric single crystal substrate is presented, wherein application of an electrical field on the composite switches the magnetic state of the switchable layer from a superparamagnetic state having no overall net magnetization to a substantially single-domain ferromagnetic state.
