A method and apparatus for controlling heat generation within a battery-powered portable computer. One aspect is directed to a computer including a battery, a battery charging circuit operatively connected to the battery to charge the battery at a charging rate, and a temperature detection and control circuit, coupled to the battery charging circuit, that detects a temperature within the computer and provides a control signal to the battery charging circuit having a control value based on the temperature detected. The battery charging circuit is responsive to the control value of the control signal to alter the charging rate. Another aspect is directed to a method for controlling heat dissipation within a portable electronic device having a battery and a battery charging circuit. The method includes steps of charging the battery at a charging rate, detecting a temperature within the portable electronic device, determining whether the temperature exceeds a reference value, and reducing the charging rate when the temperature exceeds the reference value.

A computer including a computer housing having a processor and a number of peripheral devices operatively connected to the processor, a docking connector mounted on the computer housing and operatively connected to the processor, a reservation module operative to reserve one of a plurality of resources for use by a peripheral device operatively connected to a docking station that is operatively connectable to the docking connector, and an allocation module responsive to an indication from the reservation module operative to allocate the one of the resources to one of the plurality of peripheral devices.

A docking system, including a portable computer and a docking unit, operates by latching the portable computer to the docking unit. A docking bay arrangement is used so that the portable computer's keyboard is accessible and usable by the user. A latch control system, which is controlled from the portable computer, provides security by preventing removal of the portable computer from the docking unit by unauthorized persons. This prevents theft, since the docking unit in turn is secured to the work area by a cable system.

A computer includes a multi-bit analog-to-digital converter, which is mounted within the computer's housing and has a digital output operatively connected to a bus port of the computer's processor. The computer also includes a local passive identification network that has a first node operatively connected to an analog input of the converter and further nodes respectively electrically connected to pins of a multi-contact local interface connector. A passive peripheral device identification network including a plurality of nodes each electrically connected to a multi-contact peripheral identification connector can mate with the multi-contact local connector.
