Systems and methods for automatic link calibration include subsequent to installation of equipment for the amplified optical section, obtaining power measurements of optical spectrum in the optical section; obtaining properties of fiber in the amplified optical link; analyzing the power measurements and the properties of the fiber to determine settings for the equipment for calibration thereof; and automatically configuring the settings for the equipment. The settings are based on the power measurements and the properties of the fiber to achieve a target launch power per span in the amplified optical section, and wherein the target launch power is based on Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) and non-linearity in the amplified optical section.

Automatic optical link calibration systems and methods include an optical node with an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer including a channel holder source; an optical amplifier connected to the OADM multiplexer and to a fiber span; an Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) configured to monitor optical spectrum before and after the optical amplifier; and a controller configured to obtain data associated with the fiber span including measurements from the OCM, determine settings of the channel holder source needed to meet a target launch power profile for the fiber span, and configure the channel holder source based on the determined settings.

An optical node includes one or more Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) devices which each form a respective degree connected to an associated Optical Multiplex Section (OMS) section of a cascaded optical network including a plurality of OMS sections; and a channel holder source connected to the OADM devices, wherein the OADM device is configured to detect a local fault affecting one or more traffic signals and switch to the channel holder source to provide a respective channel holder the one or more traffic signals with a same power level and spectral location such that the respective channel holder replaces a respective traffic signal at the OADM device which is a first switching port after the fault and such that all other OADM devices at other optical nodes downstream from the fault remain switched to the one or more traffic signals due to a presence of the provided respective channel holder.

An Optical Protection Switch (OPS) includes a splitter connected to a transmitted input and a path continuity monitor transmitter and configured to output the transmitted input with a path continuity monitor signal to two paths; a switch connected to a receiver output and configured to provide one of two receiver inputs each from one of the two paths based on a setting of the switch; and one or more path continuity monitor receivers connected to the two receiver inputs and configured to detect a corresponding path continuity monitor signal from a complementary OPS, wherein the setting of the switch is set based upon the received path continuity monitor signals. The one or more path continuity monitor receivers each have a narrow optical bandwidth relative to an overall optical bandwidth of the transmitted input.

Automatic optical link calibration systems and methods include, in an optical section with an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer, an OADM demultiplexer, and zero or more in-line optical amplifiers between the OADM multiplexer and the OADM demultiplexer, wherein the optical section includes integrated measurement equipment, and wherein the OADM multiplexer and the OADM demultiplexer have a route and select architecture, obtaining measurement data from the integrated measurement equipment subsequent to turn up; determining an optimal target launch power profile per fiber span in the optical section based on the measurement data; configuring channel holders at the OADM multiplexer to meet the optimal target launch power profile per fiber span; and calibrating each fiber span to determine settings of equipment at the OADM multiplexer, the OADM demultiplexer, and the zero or more in-line optical amplifiers.

A method of automated testing and evaluation of a node of a communications network, the method comprising: a management computer interacting with the node to discover fiber trails within the node that can be safely tested; and the management computer interacting with the node to test at least continuity of each identified fiber trail that can be safely tested.

Systems and methods for an optical controller in an optical network for photonic control include monitoring signal output of the optical controller for fluctuations on a signal, wherein the optical controller may operate with one or more upstream optical controllers in the optical network which may cause the fluctuations; and initiating a control loop by the optical controller on the signal based on the monitored fluctuations. The initiating is based on one or more thresholds used to differentiate actions of the one or more upstream optical controllers of the plurality of optical controllers from one or more of fiber faults, natural fluctuations in fiber plant, and natural fluctuations in hardware.

Systems and methods to control optical signals in a spectrally overlapped, flexible grid spectrum system include receiving measured power within a control bandwidth for an optical signal, wherein the control bandwidth is less than a spectral occupancy of the optical signal and equal to or greater than a resolution bandwidth of a measurement device configured to measure the measured power; and controlling the optical signal based on the measured power and a target power within the control bandwidth. The optical signals can include Nyquist spaced or super Nyquist spaced signals in a media-channel.

Control systems and methods for spectrally overlapped flexible grid spectrum using a control bandwidth

A method of validating connections in an optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) that includes a plurality of modules configured to route optical signals through the OADM, and at least one multi-fiber cable connecting modules of the OADM. A light source coupled to a first port of a first module is controlled to emit a test light. A determination is made whether or not the test light is received at a first photo-detector connected to a second port. Continuity of a connection between the first port and the second port is validated when the test light is received at the first photo-detector.
