A base element and a surge protection system incorporating the base element are provided. The base element includes a housing having a front portion and a rear portion. Apertures in the rear portion provide access to contacts secured within the housing, and a receiving portion extending from the front portion includes at least one receiving section for receiving a surge protection cartridge. Plug receptacles in the receiving portion are in electrical communication with the contacts to incorporate the surge protection device in a circuit when the surge protection cartridge is inserted. The base element is configured to mount orthogonally to a case such that conductors secured to the contacts extend through the apertures and into an enclosure defined by the case in a substantially linear direction. The system includes a case configured to be attached to a rack mount system and a plurality of base elements secured to the case.

A terminal block is disclosed that integrates a surge protection base, a disconnect and connection points to provide a Kelvin connection in which a surge protection element is in electrical communication with the ground and the connection points for incoming and outgoing wires. The terminal block includes a terminal body having a terminal body housing, a plurality of conductive elements arranged within the terminal body to create a continuous electrical path therethrough and a disconnect switch integral the terminal body, the switch arranged to open the continuous electrical path and expose a terminal. The terminal body is configured to receive a surge protection element and the surge protection element, when received in the terminal body, forms a portion of the continuous electrical path.

An electrical interconnection system includes a stationary board ('), a removable board (&#x2032;), an electrical connector (&#x2032;) interconnecting the two boards, and an actuator (&#x2032;). The electrical connector has a plurality of contacts () received in a dielectric housing (), each comprising a first contact end () contacting with the stationary board and a second contact end () contacting with the removable board. The actuator includes an actuation plate (&#x2032;) assembled on the connector and a driving member (&#x2032;) mounted on the removable board. An electrically conductive barrel extends around at least a portion of the perimeter of the bore and along a predetermined depth of the bore, the predetermined depth being less than the total depth of the bore. The barrel has an end that terminates at a countersunk portion of the bore. A contact includes a body having first and second ends. The first end includes a compliant section that is positioned in the barrel, thereby forming a separable interface between the contact and the circuit board. The second end extends out of the barrel and interfaces with an electrical component. Protrusion of the first end out of the barrel is minimized. The above relationships are used to decrease capacitive loading.

The first and second beams (136, 138) are structured to partially extend into cutouts (90) in the floor (32) of the housing to minimize overall height of the connector. Additionally, the unsupported portions of the shank (130) of each contact member (20) resiliently deflect into their respective cutouts (90) thereby enhancing the affects of the first and second beams (136, 138).
