A method of start/stop engine control based on vehicle location and driving situation includes identifying the location and driving situation of a host vehicle, and classifying the location and the driving situation of the host vehicle based on the identified location and driving situation. The engine start/stop control is based on at least one of the location classification and driving situation classification.

Method of start/stop engine control based on location information

A starter relay connects a battery with a starter motor of an engine when in a closed state and disconnects the starter motor from the battery when in an open state. A switching device provides current to the starter relay when in a closed state and disables current flow to the starter relay when in an open state. For an engine startup event, a switch control module: transitions the switching device to the closed state for a first predetermined period; transitions the switching device to the open state for a second predetermined period after the first predetermined period; and transitions the switching device to the closed state for a third period after the second predetermined period. The starter relay remains in the open state during the first predetermined period and transitions to the closed state when the switching device is in the closed state for the third period.

A control system for a vehicle includes a time determination module, a fuel age determination module, and an engine control module. The time determination module determines an engine off time, wherein the engine off time indicates an amount of time that an engine is off. The fuel age determination module determines an age of fuel in a fuel system of the engine. The engine control module starts the engine when one of the engine off time is greater than a predetermined time threshold and the age of the fuel is greater than a predetermined age threshold.

An engine control system for an engine that drives a generator includes a temperature sensor that generates a temperature signal and a control module that determines a generator torque based on an engine speed and a generator characteristic. A slow response actuator command and a fast response actuator command are generated based on the slow response torque value and the fast response torque value, respectively. Operation of the engine is regulated based on the slow response actuator command and the fast response actuator command to achieve the desired engine speed.

A torque control system for an engine includes a first module that estimates a first engine torque based on an air-per-cylinder (APC) value and a second module that estimates a second engine torque based on a manifold absolute pressure (MAP). A third module determines a desired MAP based on the first engine torque and the second engine torque. A throttle opening is regulated based on the desired MAP.

A torque control system for regulating operation of an engine includes a throttle that regulates air flow into the engine and a device that regulates a torque output of the engine. A first module determines a throttle area based on a desired manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and a desired manifold air flow (MAF) and a second module determines a device set-point based on a desired air per cylinder (APC) and an engine speed. A third module generates a throttle control signal to control the throttle based on the throttle area and generates a device control signal to control the device based on the device set-point.

Internal combustion engine control is generally in accordance with RPM and torque modes. Transition from RPM to torque control is accomplished by employing a mass airflow term accounting for any nonequivalence between RPM mode and torque mode mass airflows corresponding respectively to an RPM mode mass airflow and a closed-throttle mass airflow contribution to a total torque mode mass airflow.

An engine system includes an engine having an intake manifold and a supercharger that supplies compressed air to the intake manifold. An engine control module calculates a desired pre-supercharged pressure of air into the supercharger and calculates a desired manifold air flow into the engine. The engine control module determines a desired throttle area based on the desired pre-supercharged pressure and the desired manifold air flow and generates control signals to control the engine based on the desired throttle area.

An engine control system and method according to the invention controls torque in an internal combustion engine. Engine parameters are measured and an engine torque is estimated. A desired air per cylinder of the engine is calculated. A desired manifold absolute pressure of a manifold of the engine is calculated based on a function of engine torque. A desired RPM of the engine is calculated based on a measured engine RPM and a reference torque of the engine. A desired area is calculated based on the desired manifold absolute pressure. The desired area is implemented into the controller to control torque output of the engine.
