A foil bearing system includes a journal member with an internal groove and a foil arrangement. The foil arrangement includes at least one biasing foil and a top foil insert member. The at least one biasing foil is received between the journal member and the shaft in a radial direction with respect to the axis. The top foil insert member includes a top foil and a spine insert. The top foil includes an arcuate portion that is disposed between the at least one biasing foil and the shaft in the radial direction and that extends in a circumferential direction about the axis. The top foil includes an end that extends from the arcuate portion. The spine insert is received within the internal groove, and the spine insert is fixedly attached to the end of the top foil.

A journal foil bearing system includes a retainer arrangement with an internal groove extending in a depth direction from the bore of the housing. The internal groove has a first portion and a second portion. The first portion extends further in the depth direction than the second portion and includes a seat surface of the internal groove. The retainer arrangement additionally includes a first top foil end and a second top foil end of the top foil member. The first top foil end is configured to abut the second top foil end to arch-bind the at least one top foil within the bearing system. The first top foil end is received in the first portion of the internal groove and is configured to seat against the seat surface to limit rotation of the first top foil end about the axis. The second top foil end is received in the second portion of the internal groove.

Turbomachine with air foil bearing retainer arrangement

A journal foil bearing system includes a journal member with a bore and an internal groove. The system includes a shaft received within the bore and supported for rotation relative to the journal member about an axis. The groove extends substantially along the axis. The system also includes at least one biasing foil and a top foil member with at least one arch-bound top foil. The top foil member has a top foil first end and a top foil second end. Additionally, the system includes a foil support insert member that is received within the groove. The foil support insert member includes a spacer member that is disposed between the top foil first and second ends. The spacer member maintains the top foil first and second ends separated, at least, at a distance.

An exemplary system for a turbomachine includes a bore extending from an inner end to an outer end with an inner seat proximate to the inner end and an outer seat proximate to the outer end, a rotatable shaft with an inner slot and an outer slot, an outer seal ring capable of being received by the outer slot and capable of being seated in the outer seat and an inner seal ring capable of being received by the inner slot, capable of bridging the outer seat and capable of being seated in the inner seat where an axial width of the inner seal ring exceeds an axial width of the outer seal ring. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

Bore and shaft assembly

An exemplary method includes positioning a plurality of seal rings on a shaft operably coupled to a turbine wheel and inserting the shaft into a bore via axial inward movement wherein during insertion, an outer seal ring contracts and then expands along a chamfer to reach an outer seal seat. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

An exemplary bore for a shaft of a turbomachine includes a longitudinal axis extending generally from an inner end to an outer end of the bore, an outer seat disposed proximate to the outer end of the bore at an outer seat radius for an outer seal ring wherein the outer seat comprises an inner end, an outer end, a step at the inner end extending radially inward to a step radius, and a chamfer at the outer end extending radially inward over an outward axial distance to a chamfer plateau radius and an inner seat disposed inward the outer seat at an inner seat radius for an inner seal ring wherein the outer seat radius exceeds the inner seat radius. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

A turbomachinery apparatus. A turbine is provided with a retainer having a bore step element for turbine wheel retention, and with an aperture manifesting a tailored diameter less than the trim diameter of the turbine, thereby to permit customization of the turbine efficiency characteristic. Various configurations of turbine retainers, with tailored diameter apertures, are disclosed.

Turbine efficiency tailoring

A hydrodynamic thrust bearing of this invention comprises a body having a load-bearing surface comprising an oil supply channel and an oil return channel positioned along respective inside and outside body diameters. A number of thrust pads are positioned along the surface that each include an oil supply groove, positioned adjacent a leading edge/upstream portion of each thrust pad and extending radially a distance from the oil supply channel, and an oil return groove, positioned adjacent a trailing edge/downstream portion of each thrust pad and extending radially a distance from the oil return channel. The oil supply grooves are separate from the oil return grooves, and the thrust pads each comprise a series arrangement of three differently configured land or pad sections. Configured in this manner, oil is provided onto the series of land sections by the oil supply groove and is collected after passing over the series of land sections by the separate oil collection groove. The use of separate oil supply and collection grooves acts to minimize mixing, of input oil with the heated return oil, thereby reducing oil film temperature and increasing bearing thrust load capacity.

Diverted flow thrust bearing

An integrated bearing system with journal and thrust bearings is incorporated in a single unit centrally pinned to the bearing housing and having integral thrust surface and journal surface lubrication grooves in combination with turbine and compressor wheel thrust surfaces. The bearing employs a first aperture substantially equidistant from the ends to engage the locating pin to prevent rotation of the bearing within the bearing case bore, while allowing the bearing to be free to symmetrically wobble within the bearing case bore.
