Embodiments of the present invention include methods, terminals and circuits for updating provisioning data of a mobile terminal. A network initiated subsequent provisioning message requesting that the mobile terminal initiate a session to update the provisioning data of the mobile terminal is received and it is determined if the mobile terminal is executing a foreground data application utilizing a current registered Internet Protocol (IP) session. An IP session is selectively initiated to update the provisioning data of the mobile terminal based on the determination of whether the mobile terminal is executing a foreground data application utilizing a current registered IP session.

Methods, systems and computer program products for non-intrusive subsequent provisioning of a mobile terminal

A system and method for determining if a mobile phone is in a home area that does not rely exclusively on the HPLMN data programmed into the mobile phone. To determine whether the mobile phone is in a home area or in a roaming area a processor in the mobile phone checks the PLMN control information in an over-the-air received signal. If the PLMN data matches the PLMN data stored in the mobile phone SIM card IMSI file, then the current network is a home network. Otherwise, the received LAI control data is checked to see whether it matches any LAI data in the OPL file of the SIM card in the mobile phone. If the received LAI data does not match any LAI data in the OPL file, then the network is not a home network but a roamed into network. If the received LAI data does match LAI data in the OPL file, then the OPL file is further examined to see whether the PNN record that the OPL record points to is the first record in the PNN file. If it is, then the network is a home network. If it is not, then the network is a roamed into network.

System and method for home network determination in a mobile phone

A method of storing an e-mail address within an Abbreviated Dialing Number (ADN) record of a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is provided. The ADN record typically includes a plurality of fields having personal contact information relating to a contact stored in the ADN record. The inventive method includes the steps of allocating a first number of bytes of memory space to a first field in the ADN record, storing an e-mail address of a contact in the first field in the ADN record, and setting a flag in a second field in the ADN record indicating a presence of a e-mail address in the first field in the ADN record.

A system and method for preventing the unauthorized use of improperly obtained mobile equipment is disclosed. The mobile equipment includes a plurality of personalization categories that are programmable into the mobile equipment by the manufacturer. Prior to purchase and at the request of the network provider, at least one of the personalization categories in addition to the network personalization category is enabled in the mobile equipment by the manufacturer. Upon powering up the mobile equipment for the first time, a personalization check is performed for the plurality of personalization categories. The personalization check is destined to fail with respect to one of the personalization categories other than the network personalization category. At this point, the person attempting to activate the mobile equipment is prompted for the authorization code for the personalization category that failed. The authorization code for the personalization category that failed is obtained from the network operator once the network operator is satisfied that the mobile equipment was not improperly obtained. The person attempting to activate the mobile equipment inputs the proper authorization code for the personalization category that failed in order to disable that personalization category. Once the personalization category is disabled, the mobile equipment can function on the intended network.

Properties of radio signals exchanged between the first unit and the second unit are measured ( ). Method and arrangement in a radio communication system

Methods and apparatus of reducing deleted messages in a transmitter that sends messages organized in frames, superframes, and logical channels are provided. At least one of the channels includes structure messages that describe the organization of the frames and logical channels and a number of frames to be read by a receiver, including a number of additional frames that should be read when at least one displaced message exists. One method includes the steps of finding messages to be displaced; placing found messages in a displacement queue, and assigning messages to a frame according to a predetermined order of logical channels, including any displaced messages that fit in the frame. A message is displaced if it will not be sent in a frame of at least one logical channel and will timeout before it can next be sent, and if a message is placed in the displacement queue, then an information element is set in a message, indicating that the number of additional frames is to be read. Further steps may include removing any displaced messages included in the frame from the displacement queue, and deleting any displaced messages left in the displacement queue and sending respective notification messages for deleted displaced messages. A receiver reads the number of additional frames in response to the set information element. Suitable apparatus are also disclosed.

Reducing message congestion in a communication system

A mobile station in a wireless communication network registers periodically with the network by sending a registration message to the network on a control channel. After a predetermined consecutive number of registration attempts are made by the mobile station without a registration response from the base station, the mobile station leaves the current control channel and searches for a new control channel on which to acquire service. After acquiring service on the new control channel, the mobile station can register with the network to recover service.

Method for recovering service after registration failure in a cellular system

A digital radio communication system has a mobile station and a base station, the mobile station transmitting messages to the base station in a series of frames. Each frame has a header with a frame number and an optional polling indicator. A method of determining whether the base station is capable of receiving a message in automatic retransmission request (ARQ) format is provided. The method includes the step of transmitting from the mobile station to the base station a single frame in ARQ format with a polling indicator set such that the base station is prompted to send a status frame in ARQ format if the base station is capable of receiving messages in ARQ format. The method also has the step of determining if a status frame in ARQ format is sent from the base station to the mobile station in response to the single frame. A mobile station operating according to the method of the present invention is also provided.

A method and intelligent roaming mobile station for emulating a pre-intelligent roaming scanning routine used by a pre-intelligent roaming mobile station. The method includes the steps of selecting a search scheme from a plurality of search scheme, and restricting an intelligent roaming scanning routine to scan only the service bands within an 800 MHZ spectrum. In response to the selected search scheme, the intelligent roaming mobile station then prioritizes at least one service band operating in the 800 MHZ spectrum into a band scan order. Thereafter, the intelligent roaming mobile station scans for a channel according to the prioritized band scan order, where the channel connects a service provider to the intelligent roaming mobile station according to the selected search scheme.

In a mobile station used in a cellular mobile telecommunication system that communicates on any one of a plurality of base station cellular channels depending on cell location of the mobile station, the system being adapted to selectively determine one of the channels to process a call with the mobile station and handoff a cellular call with the mobile station from a current channel to a new channel, a handoff system for detecting system and capability changes when a handoff has occurred. The handoff system includes a memory storing data representing parameters associated with the current channel. A forward communication channel is associated with the current channel for receiving data from a base station. The data includes a handoff message if a handoff is to occur. The handoff message includes parameters associated with the new channel. A comparator associated with the memory compares select stored parameters associated with the current channel to corresponding select received parameters associated with the new channel to determine if system or capabilities of the new channel differ from system or capabilities of the current channel.

System and method for detecting and handling system and capability

A method and system used in a wireless network that provides communication service on both analog control channels (ACCs) and digital control channels (DCCHs) controls access to wireless services by a mobile station. The method comprises the steps of acquiring wireless services on a select ACC; periodically receiving a pointer to a preferred DCCH as part of a message received from the wireless network via the ACC; initially attempting to acquire wireless service on the preferred DCCH, including determining if received signal strength is acceptable and available service features are acceptable, and if not, then indicating the preferred DCCH as rejected; storing information on the rejected DCCH; and subsequently attempting to acquire wireless service on the rejected DCCH only if the DCCH was rejected due to received signal strength not being acceptable.

Periodic reexamination of DCCH pointer channel while camped on an ACC

An improved band scan method is claimed which allows a mobile unit to more quickly locate appropriate control channels in a wireless communications system operating on a communications spectrum having channel bands. The method includes storing a list of acceptable service providers in the mobile unit, receiving service provider information identifying the service provider for a particular control channel, receiving minimum acceptable signal strength information for the control channel, determining the acceptability of the service provider by comparing the received service provider information against the acceptable service provider list, and, if the service provider is acceptable, comparing the received signal strength for the control channel against the minimum acceptable level. If the control channel is allocated to an unacceptable service provider, the mobile unit terminates the band scan and returns to the procedure invoking the band scan without comparing the received signal strength for the control channel against the minimum acceptable level. By checking the service provider information earlier than in prior art methods, the present method allows for the checking of received signal strength against the minimum acceptable level to be deferred or avoided in many circumstances. The method helps reduce the time required and otherwise increases the efficiency of control channel scanning, particularly in IS-136 cellular telephone systems.

Method for reducing control channel scan time

A method for service acquisition after call release in a dual mode mobile telephone relies upon protocol versions data stored in the mobile telephone to determine whether a digital control channel is available. Each time the mobile telephone is assigned by the base station to a new traffic channel, whether during call establishment or during a hand-off, the mobile telephone stores protocol version data which is broadcast on the newly assigned channel. After a call release, the mobile telephone uses the stored protocol version data to determine whether a digital control channel is available in the channel band occupied by the last used communications channel. If no digital control channel is available, the mobile station will scan for a suitable analog control channel and acquire service immediately on the analog control channel without waiting for a pointer to a digital control channel.

Method for service acquisition after a call release in a dual mode

A method for providing a mobile station user notification of the delay of requested teleservice transaction is disclosed. Upon receipt of a request at a mobile station for origination of a teleservice transaction, the mobile station determines whether the transaction may be immediately carried out or will be delayed. If the transaction is delayed, the time period for this delay is determined. The mobile station user is notified of the delay and time period until completion of the requested teleservice transaction may be achieved.
