Methods and apparatus are provided for processing messages for access to information stored in an open directory. A Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) LDAP Validation Proxy (LVP) is used to intercept LDAP request messages intended for the directory, validates the LDAP requests according to a schema description and optionally provides side-effects. The schema validation and LDAP message processing is modularized according to object classes representing the data stored in the directory and according to services provided. The schema is enforced by validating LDAP messages. This modularization provides a controlled message processing granularity and enables multi-threaded concurrent processing of multiple LDAP messages. The LVP has the capability of generating LDAP requests in processing LDAP messages. The LVP also intercepts and processes LDAP responses issued by a directory and intended for clients.

Framework for open directory operation extensibility

This invention relates to a method and protocol to enable a simple, reliable and highly scaleable data transfer facility in a digital data network. In communication a server and a client within a data processing system, the method of transferring data from the server to the client comprises requesting, by the client, transfer of the data in accordance with a transfer unit size specified by the client The server transmits the data in successive blocks having a size based on the client specified transfer unit size, till all the data has been transferred, and the server delays at least a predetermined time period between transmission of successive blocks. This connectionless, unacknowledged data transfer protocol minimizes resource utilization at the data server and is combined with source rate control to reduce congestion in the intervening network.

This invention relates to a method and protocol to enable a simple, reliable and highly scaleable data transfer facility in a digital data network. A connectionless, unacknowledged data transfer protocol minimizes resource utilization at a data server and is combined with source rate control to reduce congestion in the intervening network. The data transfer server implementing the protocol, operates by defining a circular ordering of individual scheduling timeslots having zero or more download records. The server selects in sequence, at a predetermined rate, the individual scheduling timeslots, and services, responsive to the selected timeslot having at least one download record, each record therein according to parameters in that record. Servicing includes (I) sending, to the destination address, a download message which includes a block of data extracted from the identified data, based on the remaining data information; (ii) updating the remaining data information to reflect the block of data that was sent; and (iii) resheduling, based on the transfer rate and the predetermined rate, the download record into an appropriate one of the scheduling timeslots.
