Systems and methods described herein are directed towards an active electronically scanned array (AESA) that can perform both frequency division duplexing (FDD) operations and time division duplexing (TDD) operations. The AESA includes a switch network having one or more switching stages coupled between a transceiver and one or more array elements to switch the AESA between FDD operation and TDD operations, modify a function of one or more of the array elements in the AESA and/or swap portions of the AESA between different functions. The switch network can be disposed in a feed portion of the AESA. Thus, functions of each of the array elements or subarrays of multiple array elements in the AESA can be modified at a feed portion of the AESA. The array elements can be configured for TDD operations and FDD operations and can be configured as a transmit elements, receive elements or isolation elements.

Systems and methods for a multi-mode active electronically scanned array

This invention relates to sense through the wall radar. A main channel of a radar system () is operated at a frequency capable of penetrating opaque barriers such as the wall () of a building () to sense targets () therein. The main channel performance may be impaired by multipath interference, i.e., radar returns resulting from targets () outside the building () illuminated by reflection from the wall (). A guard channel of the radar, operating at a higher frequency which does not penetrate the wall (), is used to identify targets () outside the building () and suppress the multipath interference they produce in the main channel.

Interference mitigation in through the wall radar

A modular plug-in antenna array capable of low cost and automated manufacturing is disclosed. The antenna element is designed to work efficiently over a broadband with simplified assembly requirements and to be used in discrete or array applications. Plug-in antennas eliminate the need for external tools, and allow the antenna to be removed, for service, test, and ease of assembly. Many transceivers are assembled using printed circuit board techniques whereon electronic components are mounted using a pick and place process. The plug-in antenna connects directly onto the circuit board; with connectors that are compatible with a pick and place process and which are produced in mass quantities for the computer and telecommunications industry, thus yielding lower costs than traditional high performance RF coaxial connectors. With demands for higher antenna bandwidth, the disclosed simplified plug-in antenna provides an appropriate balance between performance and the ease of modular assembly, manufacture, and costs.

Automated sensor localization systems and methods are described. An exemplary application for the sensor localization system is in a 'Sense Through the Wall' (STTW) radar system, involving a plurality of distributed sensors or sensor nodes.

Relative location determination of mobile sensor nodes

A method and apparatus for sensing a target through a wall or obstruction by a Moving Target Indicator (MTI) radar sensor. In an exemplary embodiment, a series of radar pulses are transmitted at frequencies less than about 5 GHz. Radar return signals are received at a plurality of receive antenna array subapertures. The radar return signals are processed by a digital beamformer to form multiple beams. Target detection processing detects moving and stationary targets through a plurality of parallel target detection signal processing paths.

Mobile sense through the wall radar system

Methods to quantify the amount of radial platform motion of a portable sensor are described. In an exemplary embodiment, the method uses the frequency domain phase data in the range bin corresponding to a large stationary object. A correction factor is computed and applied back into the time domain samples prior to processing by Doppler filters used to measure motion in the scene.
