Operations include compensating for a Tracking Error Signal (TES) offset in an optical tape drive. The tracking error offset compensation system detects a control signal for controlling movement of an optical head across a surface of a tape. The tracking error offset compensation system computes an estimated movement of the optical head, based on the initial control signal. The tracking error offset compensation system determines an estimated TES offset, based on the estimated movement of the optical head. The tracking error offset compensation system uses the estimated TES offset to correct a TES. The tracking error offset compensation system transmits the corrected TES, for controlling additional movement of the optical head.

In at least one embodiment, an optical data storage tape is provided. The optical data storage tape includes a read/write data area including a plurality of writeable tracks for storing data thereon, each writeable track having a first track width. The optical data storage tape further includes a seam area positioned proximate to the read/write data area. The seam area including a plurality of non-writeable tracks, each non-writeable track including a second track width that is greater than the first track width for each writeable track.

The controller is also configured to process the feedback using data indicative of the higher power main beam to remove the noise and generate output indicative of the written data, and automatically adjust a delay of the feedback or the data indicative of the higher power main beam based on a signal quality of the output.

An optical storage system includes an optical head and controller arrangement. The arrangement is configured to write data to an optical medium via a higher power main beam, to read, directly after writing, feedback from the medium containing the written data and noise resulting from the higher power main beam, to remove the noise from the feedback by dividing the feedback with data indicative of the higher power main beam, and to generate output indicative of the written data.

The groove-monitoring system includes an optical sensor, a first light source directing a first light beam onto the optical tape surface with a first angle of incidence such that the first light beam is directly reflected from the optical tape surface and imaged by the optical sensor. The groove-monitoring system also includes a second light source directing a second light beam onto the optical tape surface with a second angle of incidence such that the second light beam is diffracted from the optical tape surface and imaged by the optical sensor as a diffracted light image.

An optical tape pick up unit includes a holographic optical element and an aspheric objective lens. The holographic optical element splits a laser beam into first order beams and introduces pre-compensating wavefront error into the first order beams. The apparatus comprises an optical system that includes at least one laser source for transmitting a laser beam therefrom. The optical system further includes a plurality of lenses for receiving the laser beam and for directing the laser beam onto at least one guard band on the optical tape to write the location marks thereon. The location marks being indicative of a longitudinal position of the data that is capable of being stored on a writeable section of the optical tape.

A system and method for providing direct read after write functionality in an optical data storage device include an optical head having a first coherent light source modulated at higher power during writing of data to the optical medium and a second coherent light source operating in a continuous wave mode at lower power while the first coherent light source is writing data. Optic components combine light from the first and second light sources and focus light from the first coherent light source to a first spot of a selected track on the optical medium and focus light from the second coherent light source to a second spot on the selected track downstream from the first spot relative to movement direction of the optical medium to read and verify the data directly after writing during the write process rather than in a separate verification process.

A tape edge sensor system for detecting lateral movement of a storage tape includes a first photo-emitter, a first photo-detector positioned to receive a first light signal from the first photo-emitter, a first aperture disposed between the first photo-emitter and the first photo-detector, and a feedback system connected to the first photo-emitter and the first photo-detector. The first aperture defines a first region at a first tape edge through which the first light signal is received by the first photo-detector with the storage tape blocking a portion of the first light signal. The feedback system determines the first photo-detector's signal amplitude and adjusts the first light signal such that the first photo-detector signal amplitude is within a first average amplitude range. A tape edge sensor system using compensating photo-interrupters is also provided.

A tape cartridge is provided with a reel mounted for rotation in a housing. Tape with a length, a width and a thickness, is wound upon the reel in a length direction of the tape. A leader is mounted to a free end of the tape. The leader has at least one portion with a width greater than the tape width to clean a tape path, such as a guide and/or a lens. Another tape cartridge is provided with a reel mounted for rotation in a housing. Tape is wound upon the reel in a length direction of the tape. A leader is mounted to a free end of the tape. A brush is mounted to a portion of the leader for cleaning a tape path.

In at least one embodiment, an apparatus for writing data and location marks on an optical tape is provided. The apparatus comprises an optical system that includes at least one laser source for transmitting a laser beam therefrom. Various embodiments herein include utilities that facilitate the substantially flat and aligned mounting of optical tape segments on testing drums to increase testing accuracy of the tape segments. In this regard, a drum for testing optical tape media is disclosed having a substantially planar portion onto which first and second ends of an optical tape segment may be mounted to thereby secure the entire tape segment around an outer testing surface of the drum. Also disclosed is fixture that may be used to precisely mount and secure the tape segment over the outer mounting surface of a drum in a manner that reduces axial run-out and wrinkling of the optical tape.
