Systems and methods are described for efficiently transmitting packetized data from a sender to a receiver over a communications link. A compression context is established between the sender and the receiver based upon commonalities in each of the data packets prior to transmitting the data over the communications link. The data is compressed according to the compression context to thereby create compressed data packets, and the compressed data packets are transmitted to the receiver across the communications link. By establishing compression contexts prior to transmission, the need for in-band signaling is reduced or eliminated.

Systems and methods for providing efficient bandwidth utilization in packet switched networks

A wireless network () with at least a first radio communication unit () and a second radio communication unit () transmits and receives signals with minimal interference from the surrounding environment of the first unit () and second unit (). The first radio communication unit () determines frequencies () having power level above a threshold (), and creates a list of these frequencies () to be transmitted to the second radio communication unit (). The second radio communication unit () places notches () in its transmission band () based on frequencies () in the list (), reserved frequencies (), and local frequencies () having signal energy above a threshold (). Method and apparatus with notched transmit frequency bins

A communication system and receiver is provided that facilitates increased message size in a communication system that supports a large number of transmitters sharing a common frequency band. The communication system facilitates increased message size by incorporating a plurality of transmit bit sets in each burst of data. The additional transmit bit sets are incorporated into a plurality of transmit codes that are generated using at least one additional spreading code that is orthogonal to the base spreading code. The plurality of transmit codes are then combined into one composite message and the composite message is spread again using another scrambling sequence. The final composite spread message is transmitted to the receiver in the appropriate message time slot, resulting in CDM/TDMA burst signal that facilitates increased message size.

System and method for variable rate multiple access short message communications

Systems and methods are provided for signaling control information in a communication of data. The method includes overwriting a portion of a frame in a sequence of frames with control information. The control information has a low bit size, and the overwriting is performed at a frequency of less than about 20% of the frames. The system includes a spread spectrum transmitter that includes a channel coder, an interleaver and framer unit, and an insertion unit. The insertion unit is configured to overwrite a portion of a frame in a sequence of frames with control information and is further configured to overwrite at a frequency of less than about 20% of the frames.

System and method for transmission of low rate data

An interworking unit () for providing an interface between a digital communication network () and a public switched telephone network (PSTN) () includes a de-vocoder (), a protocol termination unit (), and a signal combiner () for processing signals being transferred from the digital network () to the PSTN (). A digital communication signal received by the interworking unit () from the digital network () is processed by both the de-vocoder () and the protocol termination unit (). The outputs of the de-vocoder () and the protocol termination unit () are then combined into a uniquely formatted signal that is then delivered into the PSTN (). Similar functionality is also provided for processing signals in the reverse direction. The interworking unitis capable of processing signals traversing the interface between the networks () without a priori knowledge of the signal type being processed.

Method and apparatus for providing interoperation between a digital communication system and a public switched telephone network

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a satellite communications system between satellites and terminal units that are sufficiently small to be handheld units and that operate within the earth power flux density limit. This is accomplished by using spreading spectrum waveform protocols that make efficient use of the allocated bandwidth. In one embodiment, a satellite communications system comprises at least one satellite, and at least one ground station each corresponding to one of the at least one satellite. Each ground station includes a spread spectrum transmitter and a spread spectrum receiver. Each of a plurality of mobile terminals includes a spread spectrum transmitter and a spread spectrum receiver. The spread spectrum transmitter of the at least one ground station is configured to communicate via the corresponding satellite with the spread spectrum receivers of the mobile terminals, and the spread spectrum receiver of the at least one ground station is configured to communicate via the satellite with the spread spectrum transmitter of the mobile terminals, using spread spectrum signals generated from baseband information signals narrower in bandwidth than the spread spectrum signals.

The apparatus inputs of the satellite that is configured to receive digital uplink signals, an autoscaling digital multiplexer of the satellite that is configured to digitally multiplex the digital uplink signals to produce a digital composite signal, and a digital modulator of the satellite that is configured to digitally modulate the digital composite signal to produce a digitally modulated composite signal. In addition, the apparatus comprises an input of the earth terminal that configured to receive the digitally modulated composite signal and a digital demodulator of the earth terminal that is configured to digitally demodulate the digitally modulated composite signal received by the input of the earth terminal to produce a second digital composite signal. Furthermore, the apparatus comprises an autoscaling digital demultiplexer of the earth terminal that is configured to digitally separate the second digital composite signal into digital uplink signals, and a modulator of the earth terminal configured to modulate the digital uplink signals to produce modulated analog signals.
