An illustrative fracture mapping system includes: a data acquisition unit collecting measurements deformation measurements during a fluid injection phase of a hydraulic fracturing operation; and a processing system implementing a formation mapping method. The formation mapping method includes: obtaining an initial fracture map having a location and geometry for one or more fractures activated during the fluid injection phase, the fracture map corresponding to a given time during the hydraulic fracturing operation; deriving from the initial fracture map a time series of fracture maps for times preceding the given time; and storing the time series on a nonvolatile information storage medium. The deriving may be performed in an iterative fashion to obtain each fracture map in the time series from a subsequent fracture map.

At least some of the illustrative embodiments are methods including: injecting a first fluid into a subterranean zone, the injecting by way of a first borehole; making a reading indicative of surface deformation; identifying, based on the reading indicative of surface deformation, a flow path for a second fluid out of the subterranean zone; placing a compound into the flow path, the compound reduces the flow of the second fluid through the flow path.

At least some of the illustrative embodiments are methods that include: injecting a first fluid into a subterranean zone, the injecting by way of a first borehole; making a reading indicative of surface deformation; identifying, based on the surface deformation reading, a flow path for a second fluid out of the subterranean zone; drilling a second borehole that intersects the flow path; and placing a sealing compound into the flow path by way of the second borehole, the sealing compound reduces the flow of the second fluid through the flow path.

A method for representing surface deformation measurements, including providing InSAR data, wherein the InSAR data is line of sight InSAR data; providing Global Positioning System (GPS) data; filtering the InSAR data; assembling the GPS data over a time span; resolving the GPS data into a line of sight direction; determining a correction; generating a corrected line of sight image; generating a plurality of XY motion maps, wherein generating includes: correlating a plurality of XY motions from a plurality of GPS sites with a gradient of the corrected line of site image; determining a correlation coefficient; and building a plane of XY motion using at least one of the plurality of XY motions; using the correlation coefficient to produce a linear combination of the plurality of XY motion maps; and using the linear combination to convert the InSAR data to vertical motion.
