A shifting tool can include an inner mandrel, engagement members engageable with a well tool component, and a detent device that prevents relative displacement between the inner mandrel and the engagement members, but permits such relative displacement in response to a predetermined longitudinal force. A method of operating a shifting tool can include engaging engagement members with a component of a well tool, and disengaging the engagement members from the component by applying a predetermined longitudinal force, thereby causing the engagement members to retract out of engagement with the component and then extend in the well. Another shifting tool can include a retraction sleeve, engagement members that engage a well tool component, and a detent device that prevents relative displacement between the retraction sleeve and the engagement members, but permits such relative displacement in response to a predetermined longitudinal force.

Shifting tool resettable downhole

A shifting tool for use in displacing a component of a well tool can include an inner mandrel, at least one shifting key, at least one reset dog, and a retraction sleeve. The shifting key retracts relative to the inner mandrel in response to displacement of the retraction sleeve relative to the shifting key, and the reset dog extends relative to the inner mandrel in response to displacement of the inner mandrel relative to the reset dog. A method of operating a shifting tool can include engaging the shifting tool with a component of a well tool in a well, and applying a force from the shifting tool to the well tool component, thereby causing one or more reset dogs to extend into engagement with the well tool component.

A sliding sleeve opens with a deployed ball. The sleeve has a seat disposed in the housing, and the seat has segments biased outward from one another with a C-ring or other biasing element. Initially, the seat has an expanded state in the sliding sleeve so that the seats segments expand outward against the housing's bore. When an appropriately sized ball is deployed downhole, the ball engages the expanded seat. Fluid pressure applied against the seated ball moves the seat into the inner sleeve's bore. As this occurs, the seat contracts, which increases the engagement area of the seat with the ball. Eventually, the seat reaches the shoulder in the inner sleeve so that pressure applied against the seated ball now moves the inner sleeve in the housing to open the sliding sleeve's flow port.
