A process is provided including subjecting a raw Cstream containing Cdiolefins to extractive distillation to form Cdiolefins and a raffinate stream. The process includes subjecting the raffinate stream to dehydrogenation to form additional Cdiolefins, which are recycled to the extractive distillation. Another process includes modifying a Cdiolefin extractive distillation unit by forming a recycle loop with a Colefin dehydrogenation reactor. A system is provided that includes a Cdiolefin extractive distillation unit and a Colefin dehydrogenation reactor that are arranged in a recycle loop. A process is provided that includes subjecting a raffinate stream containing Colefins from an extractive distillation unit to dehydrogenation to form Cdiolefins.

Upgrading a C5 olefin stream

A process for producing high impact polystyrene including feeding at least one vinyl aromatic monomer, an elastomer, and a free radical initiator to a first linear flow reactor to form a reaction mixture. Polymerizing the reaction mixture in the first linear flow reactor to a point below the point at which phase inversion occurs to produce a first polymerization mixture and feeding the first polymerization mixture from the first linear flow reactor to a second linear flow reactor. Polymerizing the reaction mixture in the second linear flow reactor to at least a phase inversion point of the mixture to produce a second polymerization mixture and feeding the second polymerization mixture from the second linear flow reactor to at least a third linear flow reactor for post-inversion polymerization of the second polymerization mixture. The product stream can have an ESCR value of at least 10% toughness retained with less than 10 wt % rubber content.

Methods of making high impact polystyrene

A method for making a polystyrene ionomer comprises: preparing a metallic comonomer within styrene monomer to form a reaction mixture; and placing the reaction mixture under conditions suitable for the formation of a polymer composition. The metallic comonomer can be a metal acrylate, formed by contacting a metal complex and an acrylate precursor.

Synthesis with metal methacrylates as comonomers

A polymer film having a thickness of 10 microns or less and improved barrier characteristics to both water vapor and oxygen is formed from a biaxially-oriented polypropylene film of isotactic polypropylene. The polypropylene is prepared by the polymerization of propylene in the presence of an isospecific metallocene catalyst. The film has a permeability to water vapor of less than about 2.5 g/mday/25 &#x3bc;m and a permeability to oxygen of less than about 2200 cc/mday/25 &#x3bc;m. The film also has a haze properties of less than about 1%. The polypropylene contains 0.1 to 1% 2,1 insertions and has an isotacticity of at least 96% meso pentads. The isotactic polypropylene thus produced is then extruded into a sheet that is biaxially-oriented by stressing the sheet in the transverse and longitudinal directions to a draw ratio of at least about 6:1 in the transverse direction, and at least about 4:1 in the longitudinal direction.

Biaxially-oriented metallocene-based polypropylene films having reduced thickness

A heat-seal polymer film and method of forming such film is provided. The heat-seal film is formed from metallocene-catalyzed isotactic random copolymers of propylene and at least one other Cto Calpha olefin, such as ethylene random. Such films show improved heat-seal characteristics, such as reduced seal initiation temperatures (SIT's) and improved heat-seal strength, as well as other improved properties.

Disclosed is a method of producing a novel biaxially oriented film having a high diffraction of light, and flexibility. In particular, the invention disclosed provides a method for making an opaque impact copolymer film by stretching in two dimensions an impact polypropylene copolymer. The invention is disclosed to be useful for making a material particularly suitable for a variety of applications including labeling media, food packaging and laminates. Also disclosed is a multilayer film having a first impact polypropylene copolymer layer and a second layer of another polymer wherein the multilayer film has significantly reduced haze. Oriented films prepared using impact copolymer polypropylene

A polypropylene material is prepared from a blend of heterophasic propylene copolymers and propylene homopolymers. The material is prepared by blending the polymers while they are in a molten state, and forming a film or sheet from the polymer blend. The material has particular application to forming slit film tapes and similar materials. The resultant materials exhibit increased tenacity, elongation and toughness and greater surface roughness as compared to those materials prepared solely from propylene homopolymers.

Polyproplylene materials and method of preparing polypropylene materials

A method for the production of polypropylene fibers from a propylene polymer including isotactic polypropylene produced by the polymerization of propylene in the presence of an isospecific metallocene catalyst. The polymer is heated to a molten state and extruded to form a fiber preform at a temperature within the range of about 170&#xb0;-210&#xb0; C. The fiber preform is spun at a spinning speed of at least 200 meters per minute and quenched at a heat transfer rate of no more than 12 joules per second fiber. The spun fiber is then subjected to a winding operation. The fiber may be drawn subsequent to the quenching operation and prior to winding. The cooled fiber preform may be drawn to produce a fiber at a draw ratio within the range of about 1.5-4.0 with shrinkage of the fiber over the range of the draw ratio at a variance of &#xb1;25% of the median of the shrinkage factor over the draw ratio.

Process of making polypropylene fibers

Process for the production of fibers formed from an ethylene-propylene copolymer characterized as a random copolymer of ethylene and isotactic polypropylene having a random ethylene content within the range of 2-12 mole %. The propylene content of the copolymer can have an isotacticity of at least 90% meso diads. The copolymer is heated to a molten state and then extruded to form a fiber preform. The fiber preform is subject to a spinning speed of at least 500 meters per minute. This is followed by drawing the spun fiber preform at a draw ratio within the range of 1:1-6:1 to produce a continuous fiber of the ethylene-propylene copolymer. A specific ethylene-propylene copolymer has an ethylene content within the range of 6-8%.

Polypropylene fibers

Polypropylene heterophasic copolymers are produced having increased impact strength through the use of controlled rheology techniques by the addition of a peroxide at conditions which increase the deactivation or half life of the peroxide. The increased half life slows down the vis-breaking process and allows better dispersion of rubber particles within the polymer. In this way, copolymers having a high melt flow can be prepared while obtaining high impact strength and lower stiffness values, without the need for additional elastomeric modifiers.
