A space-saving scanner assembly and method are disclosed. The scanner assembly can be manufactured with optical scanning components typical of flatbed scanners. The scanner may be enclosed within a housing a substantially vertical source-contact surface with a channel and a flap coupled to the source-contact surface. The flap having a source-backing surface substantially parallel to the source-contact surface of the housing and arranged such that the source-contact surface, the source-backing surface, and the channel form an opening for receiving an edge of a source document to be scanned. The housing and the flap are configured with a number of features, which permit an operator to easily place a source over a platen forming a portion of the source-contact surface. A method for operating a space-saving scanner is also presented. The method can be broadly summarized by the following steps: providing a scanner with a housing with a substantially vertical source-contact surface and a channel extending therefrom, the vertical source-contact surface including a transparent platen portion, the channel adjacent to a lower edge of the transparent platen; and providing a flap coupled to the source-contact surface, the flap having a source-backing surface substantially parallel to the source-contact surface of the housing, wherein the source-contact surface, the source-backing surface, and the channel form an opening for receiving an edge of a source to be scanned.

In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a method for scanning an object by an image capture device comprises automatically detecting a starting end of the object to be scanned, scanning the object from the starting end and automatically terminating the scanning of the object in response to detection of a terminating end of the object.

In one embodiment, the present invention is directed to a method for verifying a scan mode selection utilized for a scanned image. The method comprises comparing the scanned image to scan samples stored in memory, determining a scan state from a scan sample that most closely corresponds to the scanned image, determining whether the scan mode selection is consistent with the determined scan state, and providing an indication that the scan mode selection is not consistent with the determined scan state.

An image correction system comprises a processor adapted to receive an image. The system also comprises a modifier accessible by the processor and adapted to automatically modify the image to replace a closed eye of a subject within the image with an open eye.

As is known in the art, it becomes progressively difficult to identify an image region as being caused by noise as the area of that image region increases. The present invention encompasses the discovery that image data associated with smaller noise regions tends to mirror image data associated with larger noise regions. In accordance with the present invention, known techniques are used to accurately identify smaller noise regions. The image data extracted from these smaller noise regions is then used to aid in the identification of larger noise regions. Accordingly, the present invention increases the area of noise regions capable of being accurately identified compared to prior art noise identification techniques. Once large and small noise regions have been identified, the noise regions can be filtered using techniques known in the art.

Method and apparatus for filtering noise from a digital image

A system and method for reducing image artifacts from a processed image are disclosed. An image enhancing system can be implemented with a memory device, an image region segmenter, an artifact detector, and a filter. The region segmenter may be configured to sub-divide an image frame. Each region may be processed by the artifact detector to identify when an image artifact is present in the region. The identified regions may be forwarded to the filter to smooth the harshness of the picture element discontinuities. The method for reducing image artifacts in a compressed and decompressed image can be broadly summarized by the following steps: receiving picture element data associated with at least one image frame; segmenting the at least one image frame into a plurality of regions in accordance with a first viewer selected imaging parameter; analyzing the plurality of segmented regions to identify regions that contain an image artifact in response to a second viewer selected imaging parameter; processing the identified regions with a filter such that at least one picture element data parameter is adjusted in response to both a third and a fourth viewer selected imaging parameters; and inserting adjusted picture element data values into the at least one image frame.
