An optical assembly includes a partial reflector that is optically coupled with a first polarization volume holographic element. The partial reflector is capable of receiving first light having a first circular polarization and transmitting a portion of the first light having a first circular polarization. The first polarization volume holographic element is configured to receive the first portion of the first light and reflect the first portion of the first light as second light having the first circular polarization. The partial reflector is capable of receiving the second light and reflecting a first portion of the second light as third light having a second circular polarization opposite to the first polarization. The first polarization volume holographic element is configured to receive the third light having the second circular polarization and transmit the third light having the second circular polarization.

A device includes a display configured to generate an image light. The device also includes a waveguide optically coupled with the display and configured to guide the image light to an exit pupil of the device. The waveguide includes a grating including a birefringent material, and a birefringence of the grating is configured to increase along a pupil-expanding direction of the device.

A switchable polarizer includes a transparent layer and switchable material layer. The switchable material layer includes strips of a switchable material that are arranged to polarize incident light propagating through the transparent layer when the switchable material is heated to a threshold switching temperature. The incident light propagating through the transparent layer is unpolarized by the strips of the switchable material when the switchable material is below the threshold switching temperature.

The lens may include a first portion, a second portion located around the first portion, and a third portion located around the second portion. The first portion may include a first helical structure having a first helical pitch. A light source or projector for a near-eye display includes a light source subassembly optically coupled to a waveguide concentrator. The light source subassembly may include several semiconductor chips each hosting an array of emitters such s superluminescent light-emitting diodes. The semiconductor chips may be disposed side-by-side, with their emitting sides or facets coupled to the waveguide concentrator, which provides a tight array of output light ports on a common output plane of the concentrator. The output diverging beams at the array of output light ports are coupled to a collimator, which collimates the beams and couples them to an angular scanner for scanning the collimated light beams together across the field of view of the display.

An optical system includes an optical waveguide, and a first optical element configured to direct a first ray, having a first circular polarization and impinging on the first optical element at a first incidence angle, in a first direction so that the first ray propagates through the optical waveguide via total internal reflection toward a second optical element. The first optical element is configured to also direct a second ray, having a second circular polarization that is distinct from the first circular polarization and impinging on the first optical element at the first incidence angle, in a second direction that is distinct from the first direction so that the second ray propagates away from the second optical element. A device is provided. The device includes a waveguide configured to output a first light having a first polarization to a first side of the waveguide and a second light having the first polarization to a second side of the waveguide. The device also includes an optical element assembly disposed at the first side of the waveguide and configured to convert the first light having the first polarization into a third light having a second polarization, and output the third light toward the waveguide. The device further includes a polarizer disposed at the second side of the waveguide and configured to transmit the third light having the second polarization, and block the second light having the first polarization.

In one example, an apparatus comprises a plurality of sub-pixels arranged sideway, a shared optical element positioned over the plurality of sub-pixels, the shared optical element being configured to direct light originating from a same location in a scene to each sub-pixel in the plurality of sub-pixels; one or more polarizers positioned between the shared optical element and one or more first sub-pixels of the plurality of sub-pixels and configured to selectively pass one or more components of the light having one or more pre-determined polarization states, to enable the photodiodes of each of the one or more first sub-pixels to generate signals based on intensities of the one or more components; and one or more processors configured to generate polarimetric measurements of the received light based on signals obtained from the photodiodes of the one or more first sub-pixels and polarization properties of the one or more polarizers.

A waveguide assembly is provided. The waveguide assembly includes a pair of pupil-replicating waveguides. The first pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving an input beam of image light and providing an intermediate beam comprising multiple offset portions of the input beam. The second pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving the intermediate beam from the first pupil-replicating waveguide and providing an output beam comprising multiple offset portions of the intermediate beam. The input beam may be expanded by the waveguide assembly in such a manner that pupil gaps are reduced or eliminated.

An optical element includes a first birefringent medium layer with orientations of directors of first optically anisotropic molecules spatially varying with a first in-plane pitch and a first vertical pitch. The optical element also includes a second birefringent medium layer with orientations of directors of second optically anisotropic molecules spatially varying with a second in-plane pitch and a second vertical pitch. The second birefringent medium layer is optically coupled with the first birefringent medium layer and configured to reduce a diffraction of a light by the first birefringent medium layer. The first in-plane pitch is substantially the same as the second in-plane pitch, and the second vertical pitch is smaller than the first vertical pitch.

A light source includes a first set of source elements and a second set of source elements. A respective set of source elements is disposed on a respective substrate and electrically coupled to a respective set of circuit pads formed on a respective top surface of the respective substrate by respective bond wires. At least a portion of the respective top surfaces face each other and are spaced apart from each other to accommodate at least some of the first set of source elements, at least some of the second set of source elements, and at least some of the bond wires. The display device that includes a light source configured to output image light, an optical assembly configured to collimate the image light, a scanning assembly configured to steer the image light, and an output device configured to output the image light for displaying images is also disclosed.

A device includes a light guide and at least one in-coupling element configured to couple an image light into the light guide. The device also includes a first out-coupling element configured to couple a first portion of the image light out of the light guide as a plurality of first output lights. The device further includes a second out-coupling element spaced apart from the first out-coupling element by a distance and configured to couple a second portion the image light out of the light guide as a plurality of second output lights. The second output lights are substantially non-overlapping with the first output lights.

A hybrid lens includes a transmissive adaptive liquid lens and an optical element including liquid crystals. The adaptive liquid lens includes a layer of optical fluid on a substrate. A focal length of the adaptive liquid lens is adjustable. The optical element including liquid crystals is optically coupled with the adaptive liquid lens. The optical element including liquid crystals is configured to adjust a refractive index across the optical element including liquid crystals in conjunction with adjusting the focal length of the adaptive liquid lens so that the optical element reduces optical artifacts caused by the adaptive liquid lens.
