A continuous-wave frequency-modulated (FMCW) LiDAR system comprises: a laser cavity around a solid gain medium; an optical source configured to optically pump the solid gain medium at a power that determines a relaxation oscillation frequency; a structure configured to apply force to the solid gain medium associated with a mechanical resonance frequency, wherein the relaxation oscillation frequency is equal to the mechanical resonance frequency within a factor of 5; an optical arrangement configured to transmit at least one optical beam from the laser cavity towards a target, and to couple into the laser cavity a received optical signal comprising at least a portion of the optical beam reflected from the target; and circuitry configured to determine at least one of an estimated distance to the target or a speed of motion of the target based at least in part on a signal from the laser cavity.

The first diffraction grating and second diffraction grating are positioned within the dispersion module such that light received from the optical assembly contacts the first diffraction grating at least two times before being directed out of the dispersion module.

A device for analyzing the material composition of an object via plasma spectrum analysis includes an optical assembly having a first aspheric mirror and a second aspheric mirror. The first and second aspheric mirrors have an aspheric surface profile. The first aspheric mirror is configured to receive a laser beam at non-normal incidence along a first axis. The optical assembly is configured such that the first aspheric mirror directs the beam to the object for plasma spectrum analysis along a second axis, the second axis being different from the first axis. The plasma emitted light emitted is collected coaxially along the second axis and redirected along the first axis in the opposite direction by the first aspheric mirror. The second aspheric mirror is configured to redirect a portion of the plasma emitted light along a third axis to a spectrometer for analysis.

A method of generating supercontinuum optical radiation, the method comprising: (a) providing an optical waveguide (), said optical waveguide exhibiting a dispersion characteristic of guided optical radiation, said dispersion characteristic comprising: (i) a first dispersion parameter (&#x3b2;) at a first wavelength (&#x3bb;), (ii) a second dispersion parameter (&#x3b2;) at a second shorter wavelengths (&#x3bb;), and (iii) a zero-dispersion parameter at a wavelength in between said first and said second shorter wavelengths; said optical waveguide further comprising at least one entrance for receiving optical radiation, and at least one exit for emitting guided optical radiation; (b) applying at least two laser radiation of said first () wavelength, (&#x3bb;) at a first power (P) and applying laser radiation of said second () shorter wavelength (&#x3bb;) at a second power (P) into said optical waveguide, said laser radiations at least partially overlapping between said at least one entrance and said at least one exit of said optical waveguide; and (c) phase-matching said applied laser radiations by adjusting said first and second powers; a supercontinuum optical radiation source; and use thereof.
