An electrical connector having an electrical conductor member with a first opening and a second opening. Grab rings mounted in the openings have inner diameters containing teeth with crests defining a superimposed inner diameter. The teeth of the grab rings deflect and frictionally engage the outer diameter of the wires to retain them in the openings. A sleeve of insulation material covers an exterior of the conductor member. The sleeve has ends that protrude past the openings and receive an insulation layer of the wires. Resilient electrical contact members are recessed from the grab rings in the openings. The electrical contact members have inner portions biased into contact with the electrical wires and outer portions biased into contact with the conductor member.

Power connector for electrical submersible pump

A string of coiled tubing for an electrical submersible well pump has insulated power conductors encased in an elastomeric jacket within the coiled tubing. A textured interface between the jacket and the inner side wall of the coiled tubing enhances frictional engagement between the jacket and the coiled tubing. The textured interface may be formed on the inner side wall of the coiled tubing and consist of a roughened or knurled surface. A tape may be wrapped helically around the jacket, the tape having an outer side with a textured surface in contact with the inner side wall of the coiled tubing. The textured interface may extend continuously for the length of the coiled tubing.

Frictional enhancement of mating surfaces of power cable installed in coiled tubing

A splice connects segments of coiled tubing and power cable together. The splice has a base and a head, each having an interior conical surface and a collet with fingers that deflect inward in gripping engagement with one of the segments in response to axial movement of the head collet and the base collet. A compression sleeve extends between the base collet and the head collet and exerts forces on the collets while the base and head are being secured together. An insulator tube slides over each of the power conductors. A retainer ring for each insulator tube grips one of the power conductors and abuts a shoulder in the insulator tube to prevent movement of the insulator tube along the power conductor.

Coiled tubing electrical power splice

A splice connects a lower coiled tubing segment containing a lower power cable segment to an upper coiled tubing segment containing an upper power cable segment. The splice has a lower terminal electrically connecting together upper ends of lower power conductors. An upper terminal electrically connects together lower ends of upper power conductors. An electrical intermediate connector has an upper end that stabs into engagement with the upper electrical terminal and a lower end that stabs into engagement with the lower electrical terminal. A load supporting member surrounds the intermediate connector and joins to upper and lower ends, respectively, of the lower coiled tubing segment and the upper coiled tubing segment.

Electrical test splice for coiled tubing supported well pump

An electrical submersible pumping system includes a well fluid pump driven by a three-phase motor. The motor has a stack of motor laminations mounted in a housing. The motor laminations have axially aligned slots spaced circumferentially around a bore. Motor windings are wound through the slots for receiving three-phase power provided to the motor. At least one set of three control lines extend axially through the motor laminations radially outward from the bore and equally spaced around the axis, The control lines may extend through channels on the outer diameter of the motor laminations. The control lines may also extend through the same slots that contain the windings. The control lines extend to a downhole element below the motor for controlling the downhole element.

An electrical submersible well pump assembly includes a rotary pump and a motor. An inner rotor is coupled to the motor shaft. The inner rotor has steel discs stacked together with end caps at each end. The discs have apertures that align to define axially extending slots. Each of the slots has a closed outer wall spaced radially inward from an outer diameter surface of the inner rotor. Inner rotor magnets are located within the slots. Continuous open and thin gaps between rotating components act as hydrodynamic bearings. Damper bars extend axially at points between the outer walls of the slots and the outer diameter surface of the inner rotor. An outer rotor has a bore that receives the inner rotor, the outer rotor being operatively coupled to the pump shaft for rotation therewith. Outer rotor magnets are mounted to the bore of outer rotor.

An electrical submersible pump assembly has modules including a pump, a motor, and a pressure equalizer. A first adapter having threads is mounted to one of the modules. A second adapter is mounted to an adjacent one of the modules, the second adapter having a tubular body, a neck, and an external shoulder at a base of the neck. A collar is rotatably carried on the neck and in threaded engagement with the threads of the first adapter. A clamp secures around the neck between the external shoulder and the collar after the collar is fully engaged with the threads on the first adapter. A pair of flanges are mounted to and extend outward from the clamp. A motor lead locates between the flanges.

Threaded connectors between submersible well pump modules

An electrical submersible pumping system (ESP) for pumping fluids from a wellbore is made of segments, which include a motor, a seal section, a pump, and a shaft assembly connected to an output of the motor drives the pump. The motor, seal section, and pump are elongate members and coupled end to end to one another by housing connectors and shaft connectors. At least one of the housing connectors and shaft connectors have portions that are pivotable with other portions, so that adjacent segments of the ESP system can pivot with respect to one another. The housing connector can be a ball and socket assembly, where the ball fits within a spherically shaped chamber in the socket assembly. Opposing ends of the housing connector can mount to respective segments by threads or bolt flanges. The pivotal shaft connector may be a universal joint.

Disclosed herein is a safety valve with a chemical injection configuration. The device includes a hydraulic fluid pressure operated piston at the housing. The device further includes a flow tube in operable communication with the piston and a chemical injection configuration disposed within the housing. Further disclosed herein is a method of maintaining the operation of a safety valve by injecting chemical fluid through a configuration within the safety valve. Still further disclosed herein is check valve. The check valve includes a seal, a dart having a closed head and sealable against the seal, one or more flutes on the dart, and a spring applying a biasing force to the dart to a sealing position, that force being overcomeable by a fluid pressure acting in a direction opposing the spring force.

Chemical injection check valve incorporated into a tubing retrievable safety valve

A rotary pump having thrust bearings includes a system for equalizing the loading on the thrust bearings. The thrust bearings are each supported on pistons that are in fluid communication with a hydraulic circuit. The hydraulic circuit has substantially the same pressure throughout, thereby floating each piston at the same pressure to provide an equal support force to each thrust bearing via each piston.

Disclosed herein is a communication and lock open device which includes a lock open portion including a latch configured to engage a shifting profile on a closure member of a safety valve. Further included is a communication portion configured to rotationally align a cutter with a non-annular hydraulic bore in the safety valve and axially cut into the hydraulic bore with the cutter. Also disclosed is a method for replacing the function of a safety valve while employing an original control line including running a communication and lock open tool in a wellbore, locating the tool in a tubing retrievable safety valve and shearing a thread in the valve to render moveable a closure member of the tubing retrievable safety valve. The method includes shifting the closure member to lock the member in an open position, orienting a cutter and establishing fluid communication with a bore of the valve.

Control system communication and lock open tool and method for locking open a safety valve and communicating with surface

A flapper valve assembly is described having an equalizing port assembly with a bleed valve member that is moveable between an open position and a closed position. The equalizing port assembly features a structural support member in the form of a retainer key that is secured to the flapper valve member both axially and radially. Additionally, a compressible spring is located between the structural support member and provides biasing force upon the valve member to urge it toward a closed position. Additionally, the flapper valve member presents a pair of raised, substantially flat actuator contact portions upon its downstream face to meet an actuating tube in a mating contact arrangement and resist material deformation that could tend to clog or block the equalizing fluid flow port.

Equalizing flapper for high slam rate applications

The annulus pressure is controlled by displacing incompressible fluid with compressible fluid in the annulus. The displaced fluid is filtered to avoid clogging small lines. The presence of compressible fluid minimizes the thermal effect of warm fluid in the production tubing on annulus pressure. As a result, thinner wall casing can be used, for considerable savings in material and installation cost.

Annulus pressure control system for subsea wells

A lock open device for a flapper is disclosed. The tool engages in the sub-surface safety valve (SSSV) body and rotates the flapper to the open position, without shifting the flow tube. The flapper base is preferably held by a shearable thread and has a groove for engagement by the tool. The tool jars down on the flapper base to shear the thread and force the held open flapper into a retaining groove. Optionally, a penetrating tool can be connected so that, in a single trip, the flapper can be locked open and the pressurized control system can be accessed. Shearing the thread allows the flow tube spring to bias the held open flapper into its retaining groove.

Lock open and control system access apparatus and method for a downhole safety valve

The invention relates to a control system for a subsurface safety valve (SSV). A pressure-balance feature is introduced such that the control system components are unaffected by the depth of placement of the SSV. Through the use of this feature, the standard hydraulic control system used for surface components can also be used for an SSV regardless of its depth of installation. In another feature of the invention, a shuttle valve is provided so that each time the SSV is stroked, a volume of control fluid is purged into the annulus. One embodiment of the shuttle valve may or may not be sensitive to annulus pressure and employs annulus pressure as an aid to stroking the shuttle valve upon application of surface control pressure to assist in actuation of the SSV, while at the same time providing for a purge of a controlled volume of fluid.
