A method includes receiving signals comprising at least one of voice information and text teletype information. The method also includes determining whether at least some of the signals contain text teletype information. The method further includes coding any of the signals containing text teletype information using a text teletype coder. In addition, the method includes coding any of the signals containing voice information using a voice coder.

System and method for communicating text teletype (TTY) information in a communication network

A test emergency response location (ERL) is used to exercise an emergency response (ER) service. The test ERL does not have any connections to the real external PSAP or OSAN and only routes the call to synthetic phones or agents. A 911 call is intercepted and routed to an ER application to make a decision on which emergency location identification number (ELIN) to use. The ER application recognizes the call originator as a synthetic phone or agent and routes it through the test ERL. In one embodiment, the test ERL is configured so that a second synthetic phone or agent is registered as the PSAP endpoint and a third synthetic phone or agent is registered as the OSAN endpoint. In a properly functioning system, the ER application forwards the call to the second and third agents. When the second and third agents receive the calls, the system is considered to be functioning properly.

Method and apparatus for testing emergency response service in a telephony environment

A gateway is provided for interfacing packet-based phone services with controllers of emergency call centers. For each type of electronic medium to be interfaced, the gateway comprises a specific I/O interface and a specific module such as a protocol stack. The gateway also comprises an auxiliary information gateway application that integrates the I/O interfaces and modules into a logical framework that enables inter-working therebetween. A controller that includes the functionality of the gateway device is also provided. Methods for enabling emergency calls, and more generally for enabling a multi-media session, are also provided.
