A gas engine is disclosed. The gas engine may include a combustion cylinder. The combustion cylinder may include an intake with an intake valve. The combustion cylinder may include an exhaust with an exhaust valve. The gas engine may include a gas admission valve assembly coupled to the intake. The gas admission assembly may include a trimmable electro-hydraulically actuatable gas admission valve to control a gas flow into the intake.

Apparatuses, systems and methods are disclosed including an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine can include an engine block defining a combustion cylinder and a crankcase, a piston moveable within the combustion cylinder; a cylinder head coupled to the engine block adjacent to and in fluid communication with the combustion cylinder, and a purge system. The purge system can be in fluid communication with the crankcase. The purge system can supply air to the crankcase and to the cylinder head. The purge system can comprise a valve cover coupled to the cylinder head, a breather coupled to the valve cover, and a fumes disposal line coupled with the breather. The fumes disposal line can transport fumes from the breather and away from the cylinder head.

An engine control system comprises a balancing arrangement together with a knock mitigation controller configured to implement a knock mitigation procedure wherein an offset input value (V) is applied to the balancing algorithm. The offset input value (V) may cause the balancing algorithm to adjust the control output (O) for the respective one of the combustion chambers to progressively vary the fuel supply or ignition timing for the affected cylinder to mitigate the knock condition. Alternatively, the controller may generate an offset output value (V) to more rapidly vary the fuel supply or ignition timing, with the offset input value (V) being selected for example to compensate for the resulting change in the control input (I) from the cylinder to the balancing algorithm, or to provide additional, more gradual adjustment to further mitigate the knock condition.

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine includes an igniter having an igniter housing with a combustion prechamber formed therein, and a piston movable within the igniter housing to increase a pressure of an ignition charge of fuel and air within the combustion prechamber to an autoignition threshold. The ignition system includes a hydraulic actuator to apply an actuating force to the piston. Related methodology is disclosed.

A control system for controlling pilot fuel injection in a dual fuel engine is disclosed. The control system may determine, using measurements from one or more sensors, one or more combustion parameters associated with the dual fuel engine during operation of the dual fuel engine. The control system may determine an estimated nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions level based on the one or more combustion parameters, and may determine a NOx error based on a comparison between the estimated NOx emissions level and a desired NOx emissions level. The control system may control a quantity of pilot fuel injected into the dual fuel engine based on the NOx error.

A controller for an internal combustion engine is configured to operate the engine at a desired output power and at a desired air/fuel ratio provided in the cylinder, the desired air/fuel ratio depending on an amount of air, the primary fuel, and the secondary fuel provided to the cylinder selectively; gradually increase a power output of the engine during a transient event from an initial power output, to an intermediate power output, and then to a final power output; during the transient event, simultaneously with the power output increase, increase the amount of the primary fuel and the secondary fuel to produce a rich air/fuel ratio in the cylinder.

An ignition system for an engine is disclosed. The ignition system may have an igniter connected to selectively ignite a fuel mixture within the engine, at least one sensor configured to sense operation information of the engine and generate corresponding signals, and a controller in communication with the igniter and the at least one sensor. The controller may be configured to cause a first striking of the igniter to ignite the fuel mixture, make a determination that the fuel mixture has been ignited by the igniter based on the signals, and selectively cease striking of the igniter based on the determination.

An engine having at least a primary and secondary fuel supplies is configured to operate by determining a fueling mode for each of first and second groupings of cylinders, independently. A method, therefore, for operating the engine includes monitoring engine operating parameters with an electronic controller, determining an engine operating point based on the engine operating parameters, calculating a first operating mode of a first cylinder grouping based on the engine operating point, calculating a second operating mode of a second cylinder grouping based on the engine operating point, and selectively activating at least one of a diesel injector, a gaseous fuel injector and a spark device in each engine cylinder separately and selectively for each cylinder of the first and second cylinder grouping based on the engine operating point.

Hybrid combustion system and method

The disclosure describes a system for pressurizing a fluid. The system includes a source of liquid fuel, a pressure build chamber in fluid communication with the source of liquid fuel such that the pressure build chamber is configured to receive a volume of liquid fuel from the source, wherein the pressure build chamber is configured to heat a portion of the volume of liquid fuel to a sufficient temperature to convert the portion of the volume of liquid fuel into a gaseous fuel or supercritical fluid, and wherein the pressure build chamber is configured to increase a pressure of a fluid in the pressure build chamber to a threshold pressure to inject the gaseous fuel or supercritical fluid into an engine.

A NOx control system includes a lean NOx catalyst and an alcohol generator. The lean NOx catalyst includes a substrate and a hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) catalyst disposed on the substrate. The HC-SCR catalyst catalyzes a reduction of NOx with an alcohol. The alcohol generator generates the alcohol.

A control system for an engine including a fuel delivery system and an ignition source is provided. The control system includes a detector, a processor, and at least one actuator. The detector is configured to sense a signal to change from a compression ignited fuel to a spark ignited fuel. The processor is configured to receive the signal from the detector and generate an actuation signal. The actuator is configured to receive the actuation signal, vary an operating speed of the engine, and selectively control at least one of the fuel delivery system and the ignition source.

A control system for a dual-fuel engine is disclosed. The control system may have a gaseous fuel injector having a nozzle located at a first air intake port of a cylinder of the engine and configured to inject a variable amount of gaseous fuel radially into the cylinder based on at least one of a load and speed of the engine. The control system may also have a liquid fuel injector configured to inject a fixed amount of liquid fuel axially into the cylinder based on the at least one of the load and speed of the engine. The control system may additionally have a regulator configured to selectively adjust a flow of gaseous fuel to the gaseous fuel injector and at least one sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of a performance parameter of the engine. The control system may also have a controller in communication with the regulator and the at least one sensor. The controller may be configured to selectively cause the regulator to adjust the flow of gaseous fuel based on the signal.

A fuel system for an engine is disclosed. The fuel system may have a gaseous fuel injector configured to inject gaseous fuel radially into a cylinder of the engine. The fuel system may also have a primary cooling line configured to circulate coolant through the engine. The fuel system may also have an auxiliary cooling line fluidly connecting the primary cooling line with the gaseous fuel injector.

A fuel system for an engine is disclosed. The fuel system may have a first fuel injector configured to inject a first stream of gaseous fuel radially into a combustion chamber of a cylinder of the engine through a first air intake port. The fuel system may also have a second fuel injector configured to inject a second stream of gaseous fuel radially into the combustion chamber through a second air intake port to collide with the first stream of gaseous fuel.

An internal combustion engine operates on a six-stroke combustion cycle including a first compression stroke, a first power stroke, a second compression stroke, and a second power stroke. A first fuel charge is introduced to a combustion chamber of the engine at a first fuel rate during the first compression and/or first power stroke to produce lean exhaust gasses. A second fuel charge is also introduced to the combustion chamber during the second compression and/or second power stroke to normally produce lean exhaust gasses. Periodically, the second fuel charge can be increased to a second fuel rate to produce stoichiometric rich exhaust gasses. A lean nitrogen oxide trap can be disposed in an exhaust system associated with the engine to temporarily trap nitrogen oxides. Once saturated, the LNT can be periodically regenerated by production of the rich exhaust gasses.
