Power conservation logic for a storage node operates in parallel with an emergency shutdown process in which an emergency power source is engaged and data and metadata are destaged from volatile memory to non-volatile managed drives. The power conservation logic serially implements power conservation actions until enough reserve power is available to complete the emergency shutdown process. The power conservation logic may learn how much power savings are realized from each conservation action and adjust the order in which the conservation actions are serially implemented, e.g. in order from greatest to least power consumption reduction.

A method for safeguarding data stored in a memory of a data storage system includes monitoring values of a subset of environmental variables associated with the data-storage system and updating a portion of a table containing values of environmental variables associated with the data-storage system. The table includes values for environmental variables that are not in the subset of environmental variables monitored. The values of the environmental variables are then inspected. On the basis of the inspection, a condition in which there exists a high-risk of data loss is determined.

Determining environmental availability in a storage subsystem

A local area network includes a plurality of devices and a firewall for interfacing the LAN to a wide area network. In the LAN, each device generates a message packets for transmission over the network in which a time to live field contains an initial value that is preferably selected to be a function of the maximum path length for transfer of message packets within the local area network. Similarly, the firewall, when it receives message packets from the WAN for transmission to a device on the LAN provides in the time to live field an initial value that is preferably selected to be a function of the maximum path length for transfer of message packets within the local area network. When the firewall received a message packet from the LAN for transmission over the WAN, it provides a default initial value that is selected for use for message packets transmitted over the WAN in the time to live field, which typically will be significantly higher than the initial value that is used in the local area network. Since the initial time to live value used in the local area network is preferably selected to be a function of the maximum path length for transfer of message packets within the local area network, it can be much lower than the value that is typically used. This can reduce the bandwidth taken up by message packets that are in a loop in the local area network, which, in turn, can allow for increased bandwidth available for message packets that are being transferred through a portion of the loop but which are not themselves looping through the entire loop.

A method and apparatus for effecting low cost audible communication between a local machine at a local site and a remote modem, over a wide area network. A remote modem, e.g. in a modem pool is configured to include a converter added to a telephone interconnection of a modem in the modem pool. As the remote modem receives communication(s) from the local machine the signal generated by the modem onto a local phone line for communication with the remote computer, is split and the converter receives the signal (heading to or from a WAN) from the telephone side of the modem. The converter provides an audio output that is input to sound processing hardware on an interface PC that runs an audio streaming program which packetizes and puts the audio signal back onto the WAN for transmission to the local computer. The local computer, suitably equipped with sound processing hardware and a similar audio streaming program receives the audio from the remote modem communication and can 'play' it as continuous time-based audio. In this manner, one can listen to the exchange of signals between the remote modem and the local computer, over the WAN and at the local computer.

A method and apparatus for controlling the distribution of computer software products stored at a file server provide for requesting the identity of the user and the user's secret key prior to enabling access to a requested program product. The program product, upon proper verification of the user identify, is encoded using a second key which is known to the user, and preferably an identification of the user is embedded in the encoding program. Various methods are employed for tracking user access to particular programs, including storing the identify of the user either camouflaged in a commonly found program in non-volatile memory or hidden in a typically overlooked portion of non-volatile memory. In addition, the encoded program can have embedded therein one, and preferably two identifications of the user which can be used to track the program as well as to ensure that the program, when executed has not been tampered with. Upon execution of the encoded program by the user's system, the code is executed 'on the fly' and no executable copy of the code is stored in non-volatile memory at any time. In the event that decoding does not result in a properly executable program, the system may need to be rebooted and/or the program may be at least partially destroyed.
