A device () which includes a monitoring unit (), a therapy unit (), and a display () that includes a touch screen (). The monitoring unit () can be configured to monitor a person's vital signs, such as a person's electrocardiogram (ECG). The therapy unit () can be configured to administer an electric shock. The display () can be configured to display the ECG and enable a user to scroll the displayed ECG back and forth and/or to zoom in and zoom out the displayed ECG by touching the touch screen (). The display () can also be configured to enable the user to select two or more separate segments of the ECG to view together at the same time on the display (), which segments can be separated by intervening segments of the ECG that can be hidden from being viewed on the display (). The display () can have multiple user-interface windows (). One window () can be configured to only display functions related to the monitor unit () and/or the therapy unit (), while another window () can be configured to display software applications, including an electronic patient care record (ePCR) application.

A monitor device having a sensor interface includes a connector portion configured to mechanically interface with one or more sensors of a pre-defined type. A hardware interface layer is configured to determine a sensor type and establish a communication interface with the sensor type. A hardware abstraction layer is configured to store a plurality of protocols corresponding with the one or more sensors of a pre-defined type. The hardware abstraction layer communicates with the sensor using a selected protocol for that type through the communication interface to permit interaction between the device and the sensor type.

Automatic external sensor interface

A defibrillation method and apparatus are described for delivering a desired quantity of electric charge to a patient. The method and apparatus are applicable both to external defibrillation and to defibrillation by an implanted device. The method includes determining one or more intended waveform parameters based on the desired quantity of electric charge and, optionally, on one or more patient impedance values. A defibrillation waveform is then generated and applied to the patient based on the intended waveform parameters. The patient impedance values may be predetermined or operator-selected, or the method may include the step of determining the patient impedance values. Patient impedance values may be determined prior to, substantially contemporaneous with, and/or during application of the defibrillation waveform to the patient. If a patient impedance value is determined to have changed from a previously determined value, then the intended waveform parameters may be adjusted based on this change in order to provide that the desired quantity of charge is applied to the patient.
