An adaptive voltage scaling system includes first and second devices. Each of the first and second devices includes at least one master serial interface port and at least one slave serial interface port. The first device is operatively coupled to a voltage regulator, and the slave serial interface port associated with the second device is operatively coupled to the master serial interface port associated with the first device. The first device controls the voltage regulator based on information obtained from the first and second devices using the master serial interface port associated with the first device and the slave serial interface port associated with the second device. The first and second devices receive voltage from the voltage regulator. A corresponding method and computer-readable medium are also disclosed.

Adaptive voltage scaling using a serial interface

An integrated circuit power grid is provided with improved routing resources and bypass capacitance. A power grid for an integrated circuit comprises a plurality of thick metal layers having a plurality of metal traces, wherein at least one of the thick metal layers has a lower pitch than a substantial maximum pitch allowed under the design rules for a given integrated circuit fabrication technology. A power grid for an integrated circuit can also comprise a plurality of thin metal layers having a plurality of metal traces, wherein a plurality of the metal traces on different thin metal layers are connected by at least one via, wherein the at least one via is substantially surrounded by a metal trace on at least one thin metal level connected to a different power supply voltage than a power supply of one or more additional thin metal levels. The via can be positioned, for example, at an intersection of a given standard cell row and a given vertical strap.

Integrated circuit power grid with improved routing resources and bypass capacitance

An integrated circuit having a monitor circuit for monitoring timing in a critical path having a target timing margin is disclosed. The monitor circuit has two shift registers, one of which includes a delay element that applies a delay value to a received signal. The inputs to the two shift registers form a signal input node capable of receiving an input signal. The monitor circuit also has a logic gate having an output and at least two inputs, each input connected to a corresponding one of the outputs of the two shift registers. The output of the logic gate indicates whether the target timing margin is satisfied or not satisfied.

Critical-path circuit for performance monitoring

A delay circuit having reduced duty cycle distortion is provided. The delay circuit includes a plurality of delay elements connected together in a series configuration. Each of the delay elements has a prescribed delay associated therewith. The delay circuit further includes a controller connected to respective outputs of the delay elements. The controller is configured such that signal paths between the respective outputs of the delay elements and an output of the controller have delays that are substantially the same relative to one another. Each of the signal paths has a tri-statable switching element associated therewith.

Delay circuit having reduced duty cycle distortion

Operational speed of an integrated circuit chip is measured using one or more speed measurement elements, such as ring oscillators, disposed at various regions of the chip. Each speed measuring element can include several ring oscillators, each corresponding to a different technology threshold voltage. The speed measurement data collected from the speed measurement elements can be used to determine on-chip variation (OCV). Circuitry either on the chip itself or, alternatively, external to the chip can adjust a chip operational parameter, such as core voltage or clock speed, in response to the speed measurement data. Speed measurement data can be read out of the chip through JTAG pins or an interface to an external host.

On-chip variation, speed and power regulator

Techniques for enhancing the performance of an IC are provided. A method of enhancing IC performance includes the steps of: associating at least one performance result of at least one performance monitor, formed on the IC, with deterministic combinations of IC performance and a processing parameter, a supply voltage, and/or a temperature of the IC; determining an IC processing characterization of the IC as a function of the performance result for at least one prescribed supply voltage and temperature of the IC, the IC processing characterization being indicative of a type of processing received by the IC during fabrication of the IC; and controlling a voltage supplied to at least a portion of the IC, the voltage being controlled as a function of the IC processing characterization and/or the temperature of the IC so as to satisfy at least one prescribed performance parameter of the IC.

Integrated circuit performance enhancement using on-chip adaptive voltage scaling

Generally, methods and apparatus are provided for deriving an integrated circuit (IC) clock signal with a frequency that is offset from the IC system clock. An offset clock having a frequency that is offset from a system clock is generated by configuring a ring oscillator in a first mode to generate the system clock having a desired frequency; and adjusting the configuration of the ring oscillator in a second mode to generate the offset clock having the frequency that is offset from the system clock. The configuration of the ring oscillator is adjusted in the second mode by adjusting (i) a power supply value applied to the ring oscillator in the second mode relative to a power supply value applied in the first mode; or (ii) a number of delay line elements that are active in the ring oscillator loop.

Method and apparatus for deriving an integrated circuit (IC) clock with a frequency offset from an IC system clock

An semiconductor device including logic circuitry, a plurality of pins, and an interface unit coupling the logic circuitry to the plurality of pins, wherein the interface unit permits any of the pins to be coupled to any portion of the logic circuitry. The semiconductor device provides a template by which many different types of semiconductor devices, with varied pin assignments, can be manufactured, without the need for changing production masks.

An integrated circuit debugger incorporated into an integrated circuit, allowing direct access to internal points within the integrated circuit. By having direct access to internal points within the integrated circuit, the debugger is capable of faster and more accurate debugging. The debugger is able to directly access internal points of the integrated circuit which were previously inaccessible or only accessible indirectly for debugging, such as memory addresses, memory data, read/write strobes, and internal chip states. In addition, by accessing internal points of the integrated circuits directly, debugging instructions can be performed in real-time with minimal interruption to the operation of the integrated circuit.

On-chip debugger

A method and apparatus allowing two independent arbiters which do not directly talk to one another to function on a common system bus, allowing efficient operation of a master controller, and virtually endless capability to add peripherals to the common system bus without problems or major modifications commonly associated with additional arbitration overhead. A master controller sets time slot parameters for an external, subordinate arbiter as often as desired. Based on the time slot parameter information, the subordinate arbiter functions on an electrically separated portion of the common system bus during all times but for a time slot associated with communication of the super arbiter over the entire common system bus. During this time, a tri-state buffer element allows communication between portions of the common system bus. In an adaptive arbitration mode, the subordinate arbiter combines static time slot information assigned in configuration registers together with actual bus requests to generate grant signals to the requesting devices, and reassigns all or portions of time slots which, although assigned to a particular device, are left unused for the relevant system cycle. A historical buffer may be maintained for any or all time slots. Using this historical information, long term statistical information may be generated. Moreover, the master controller may re-tune time slot configurations based on the historical information regarding past recent use of the relevant time slots.

Adaptive bus arbitration using history buffer

A flexible memory overlaying apparatus and method stores repeatedly referenced information, e.g, common global variables, common code segments, interrupt service routines, and/or any other user or system definable information, in spare addressable circuits accessed by a memory aliasing or overlaying module. The memory aliasing module monitors (or snoops) memory access by a processor to redirect access to certain appropriate addressable circuits to provide faster access to the information than would be available in an access made from main memory. The memory overlaying apparatus and method provides an efficient context switching, e.g., during an interrupt, enables a reduction in the size of instruction code requirements, and helps avoid the occurrences of cache misses, and/or thrashing between cached pages.

Memory aliasing method and apparatus

The frequency doubling circuit according to the present invention includes first and second pulse generating circuits generating first and second pulse trains based on a periodic input signal. The second pulse train is out of phase with the first pulse train, and a combining circuit combines the first and second pulse trains to generate a periodic output signal having twice the frequency of the periodic input signal. Both the first and second pulse generating circuits include first and second charge storage devices, with the second charge storage device having half the storage capacity of the first charge storage device.

Frequency doubling method and apparatus

The simulation of the output of a crystal circuit is greatly accelerated to steady state by altering the conventional model of a physical crystal to include a constant current source. The constant current source has an oscillating output which is temporarily inserted into the simulated circuit by driving current for only a certain length of time, e.g., for only once cycle of a frequency chosen to correspond to the resonant frequency of the crystal being modeled. The output current of the current source is thereafter forced to zero to effectively remove it from the simulated circuit. The peak current amplitude of the current source is initially selected based on parameters of the crystal being modeled, and estimated by formula, then empirically adjusted if necessary to obtain fast simulation results of the crystal circuit to a steady state. A look-up table can be implemented in SPICE or any other circuit simulation tool to implement the current source in the crystal model.
