A technique is provided for utilizing an optical fiber in a variety of sensing applications and environments by beneficially routing the optical fiber. A continuous optical fiber is created to provide optical continuity between two ends of the optical fiber. The optical continuity is created with the assistance of an optical turnaround constructed in a simple, dependable form able to control the bend of the optical fiber as it extends through the optical turnaround.

A method for providing a protected splice in a hybrid cable that has a fiber optic line and an electrical line includes the steps of providing an optic splice in the fiber optic line; providing a electrical splice in the electrical line proximate to the optic splice; connecting a tube over the optic splice; installing a boot over the electrical splice; disposing the tube and the boot in a slotted sleeve; positioning the slotted sleeve within a housing; and anchoring the housing to the hybrid cable on opposing sides of the splices.

System and method for performing and protecting hybrid line splices

A technique enables the reduction or prevention of galvanic action by electrically insulating components of a system. Fiber optic systems can be protected with the technique by preventing the formation of hydrogen ions through galvanic action that otherwise contribute to hydrogen darkening of optical fibers.
