A clothes washing machine is provided with an improved detergent dispenser which can use either liquid or powder detergent for both the prewash and wash cycles of the machine. The dispenser includes a base for receiving the prewash detergent. A tray having a powder detergent cup and a fabric softener cup is positioned within the base. A liquid detergent cup is removably nested within the powder detergent cup. The liquid detergent cup includes a siphon which drains into the powder detergent cup, which in turn drains into the base of the dispenser. The softener cup includes a siphon which drains into the base of the dispenser. The base includes an outlet drain through which the detergent and fabric softener drain for introduction into the tub of the washing machine.

Dual use detergent dispenser

A high efficiency water valve member for a washing appliance includes a hot water valve, a cold water valve, and a low cold water valve. Associated with the hot water valve, the cold water valve, and the low cold water valve are a hot prime mover, a cold prime mover, and a low cold prime mover. These prime movers move their respective valves between their open and closed positions. When filling for a hot wash the hot prime mover and the low cold prime mover are energized to open the hot water valve and the low cold water valve. The cold water valve remains closed. For warm washes all three solenoids are activated to open all three valves. For cold washes the cold prime mover and the low cold prime mover are energized either together or alone to open either or both of the cold water valve and the low cold water valve.

High efficiency water valve for washing appliance

An improved front loading washing machine is provided with additive dispensers located in the shroud. The dispensers are integral with the shroud so as to have large upwardly disposed mouths for receiving additives, such as fabric softener and bleach. The dispensers are covered by the door when the door is closed, and thereby hidden from view. The position of the dispensers adjacent the front and top of the washing machine provides for easy access for filling the dispensers with desired additives.

A data acquisition system having selective communication capability to enable the data acquisition system to communicate with other data acquisition systems. The probe of the present invention initiates communication with a data acquisition unit located in an appliance. The data acquisition unit maintains a collection record which indicates the current setup and counts of the appliances. When the probe communicates with the data unit, it identifies itself and based upon this identification, the data unit responds with a particular collection record which is compatible with the probe communicating with the data unit. In addition, if the probe is used to setup a data unit, the probe decides what type of setup record to send based upon the collection record received from the data unit.

An apparatus and system for permitting dual-mode configuration of an appliance control board preferably in conjunction with an external electronic programming device or by means internal to the appliance. Preferably, a set of selection switches are provided in an interior space of the appliance that are used to select desired operating parameters. By changing the setting of the switches, the operator may configure the appliance for many specific modes of operation. In addition, the appliance can be electronically reconfigured by use of a hand held data probe.

Control board having dual means of configuration

A compact induction coin drop assembly is provided which includes a coin guide system for guiding horizontally inserted coins rearwardly and downwardly from a coin receiving slot through a predetermined coin test area between the rear of the face plate and rearwardly spaced induction coils associated with coin sensing apparatus. The coin test area includes a coin guide adjacent the rear of the face plate for guiding an inserted coin along a path close to the rear of the face plate. After traversing the coin test area, coins are directed to either a storage receptacle or to a coin return slot in the face plate.
