Methods and systems are disclosed for routing and distributing interrupts in a multi-processor computer to various processing elements within the computer. A system for distributing the interrupts may include a plurality of logic devices configured in a hierarchical tree structure that distributes incoming interrupts to interrupt redistributors (redistribution devices). The system also includes plural processing elements, where each processing element has an associated bus address. A shared serial bus couples the redistribution devices and processing elements. Each of the redistribution devices is configured to transfer the incoming interrupts to at least one of the processing elements over the common bus, based on the bus address.

Distributed interrupt scheme in a multi-processor system

Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to virtualized access to input/output (I/O) subsystems. In one implementation, the present invention allows multiple stand-alone application servers or virtual servers to share one or more I/O subsystems, such as host-bus adapters and network interface cards. In one implementation, I/O access is managed by one or more virtual I/O servers. A virtual I/O server includes a multiplexer, and associated modules, that connect application servers over an I/O switch fabric with one or more HBA and/or NIC drivers. Implementations of the present invention can be configured to consolidate I/O access, allowing multiple servers to share one or more HBAs and NICs; dynamic control over network and storage I/O bandwidth; and provisioning of network and storage I/O access across multiple application servers.

Virtual input/output server

A method is provided for responding to a computer system call requesting creation of such new process in a multicomputer system which includes multiple sites, each site including a local processor and local memory, and wherein the multicomputer system includes a distributed process directory which is distributed across multiple sites such that different site memories include different fragments of the process directory and such that the distributed process directory includes a multiplicity of slots, the method comprising the steps of: creating the new process on a respective site; providing in memory of at least one site a designation of sites for which respective process directory fragments include at least one unallocated slot; selecting a respective site from the designation; and referencing a respective process identification corresponding to the new process in a slot in a respective process directory fragment on the selected site.

Multicomputer system

A method for creating a process in a multicomputer system that includes interconnected multiple sites. Each site includes a local processor, local memory, and a local operating system including a local process manager server that is addressable through an associated process port identifier. The operating system includes a messaging facility for controlling the transfer of messages between different processes on different sites. A process directory structure is distributed across multiple sites. The fragmented process directory structure includes a multiplicity of slots for referencing a multiplicity of process port identifiers. A process directory port group structure is provided in the site memory of at least one of the sites, and references respective port identifiers associated with respective process managers on respective sites. A process directory port group manager is provided that is operative on at least one of the sites. A call is issued to a respective process manager server to request the creation of a new process operation. A first message is transferred from the respective process manager receiving the call to the process directory port group manager to request allocation of a slot. A second message is transferred from the process directory port group manager to a process manager associated with one of the port identifiers. The second message is a request to allocate a slot in the process directory fragment of the process manager receiving the second message. The new process creation operation is completed on the site that contains the process manager receiving the call.

A first message is transferred from the respective process manager receiving the call to the process directory port group manager to request allocation of a slot. A second message is transferred from the process directory port group manager to a process manager associated with one of the port identifiers. The second message is a request to allocate a slot in the process directory fragment of the process manager receiving the second message. The new process creation operation is completed on the site that contains the process manager receiving the call.
